1965 Churchill Coin

Postby TheJonasCollegeFund » Wed Feb 01, 2012 3:16 pm

I have read where this HUGE coin is CuNi but I have a book where it says it's silver. Did they produce both this coin? I can't find anything on it being silver.

Where's the experts with the answers....you may add a pic since I am unable at this posting.

THANKS!

They weren't silver. What is misleading about it is that you may have read something to the effect of "the last sterling crown" because sterling is in reference to the monetary system, not the metal.

It is a "Crown" (5 shillings) not a (pound).

They are quite common and also quite popular. I would love to find a cheap source.

Many of the Commonwealth countries produced Churchill coins from 1965-1976. Some, like the GB crown, were minted in CN. Others, like the Turks 20 Crowns (1.1509 ASW), were Sterling. I've always liked the large Turks Sterling coins.

Yepper that's it.....a nice heavy addition to the CuNi pile!

Two smart-alec answers:
1. One crown = 5 shillings = 60 pence = 240 farthings. :geek: <-- nerd
2. Whatever someone will pay.

Yeah commemorative crowns from that time are technically worth 25 pence (the crown's approximate pre-decimalmalization value translated into the new 100-base decimal Pound) and the ones they make now are worth five pounds. People don't generally use them in commerce so I've heard that if you want to spend them its best to use them at a Post Office where they can't be turned away.

This is one of my favorite coins, and I can assure you it is not silver. I wish it was because I would have a small fortune on my hands.
