This is my first hobo nickel. I opted for a 1942 non-silver Jefferson as my host nickel. This is what happens when you have 2 patients no-show.

Awesome work, Rodebaugh! You should start a business. I might be interested in a few...

Thanks, I am thinking about listing it on fee bay....curious what it is worth to somebody? If I do, I am sure I will post a linked sell thread or run a contest or something.

I used old autoclaved burs for the carving of this coin. No coin to tooth action here ;) . Found that round carbide burs cut the smoothest with the least amount of chatter. Diamond burs cut great but leave an undesirable look. I am going to try and make another sometime this week…..there is always downtown here and there to piddle around in. If I make any more I will post some pics.

You should start making them out of 1964 nickels. Help get those darn things out of circulation.

So I listed it on FeeBay last night. Put a HIGH starting price on it because I really don't want to part with it for anything less for now. I have started working on a second piece.....the next one is going to be WAY BETTER now that I know more about how the material cuts and reacts to instrumentation. I have got some cool ideas.

Thanks for the link so I could see the picture. It isn't viewable in the original post, at least not for me.

That is really cool. Hopefully, that wasn't a kitty cat under the boot.

If you haven't been to a major coin show anywhere, do try to attend one that has a display table by the Hobo Nickel Society. I found the card I picked up at the FUN Show in January. They have a website which is: http://www.hobonickels.org

There was also another cool gentleman that I met at the show that is a goldsmith and carver. He carved toothpicks. That was absolutely amazing. His website is: http://www.shamey.com

Enjoy this newfound hobby! You have talent.

Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. Who knows, we might find a carved nickel some day in our searches. :geek:

Dude, congrats on the bid! That's amazing. And it's coming from a seller with 1000+ feedback. Very impressive.

Good luck on all the future auctions I'm sure you're going to be listing.

Cool stuff, and that is awesome you got a bid. What tools minimum would work to carve on a nickel? Would I need a Dremel tool or would certain hand tools be good enough? Seems like it could be fun, and I have seen a few on Ebay that are out of this world good.

Cool, I carve hobos too. Critter stomp is a sweet carving and I saw somebody bid 100 bucks for it, wow! Can't beat that for a first carving. :D

There is a rich benefactor to the hobo nickel art world who buys thousands of bucks worth each month, at least. That is the dude who is buying yours. For those who wish to become a successful paid artist, you can make hobo nickels using a dremel, hand gravers, punches, chasing tools, hammer and nails, whatever! Gravers give the best control and detail in my experience. If you have questions I would be happy to answer them. I have carved over 50 of them, but I am still a beginner. Check out the Original Hobo Nickel Society website to be impressed beyond belief.
