A Pound of Metal Per Mile 2012 last report

While the world is awash in funny paper money, I wish a good 2012 for all of you and plenty of scrap and bullion coins!

The first weekend of the new year brought;

7 lb 6 oz steel
11 oz lead wheel weights
1 oz copper/brass
1 lb 4 oz aluminum cans

A few pounds of steel came from a burned out spot at the bottom of a hill where an obvious
car wreck occurred. What ever was left of the vehicle was removed. Something that gave me
pause was seeing leftover medical waste such as rubber gloves and IV bags abandoned by the
paramedics.

1 nickel
2 zinc pennies

1 golf ball

I always read your posts with quite an interest! I must have missed this....but....what are you doing with all of the golfballs? I find 'em here and there when I'm out metal detecting but most are weathered and likely not any good to anyone.

Most of mine are fresh off the golf course. Just been collecting them in a box.

Do you take the same route often? I have had my eye open while walking particularily looking for wheel weights and have only found a 1/2 oz and a 1 oz. I would like to find more to "repurpose." What types of streets are these? City streets, highways or interstates? Interesting.

Mesa Az has a population around 500,000. The busier avenues I'll hit on the weekends to avoid traffic. I always take a different route on various days of the week, usually a route is dedicated to a specific day, given conditions like getting
off work in time to go out before dark. A mile for me is actually two miles because I'll go out on one side and come back the other. But the metal is averaging one pound in that mile as the crow flies.

The metal is definitely proportional to the traffic. There are areas where metal gathers too, such as gore points, turns, driveways, gutters, etc.

I have noticed some homeless picking up the cans but they skip the other metals. I'll grab anything that fits into a shopping bag or go back for something big in the truck if it warrants the gas to do it. Right now I know where a steel wheel hub waits one mile from the house. As soon as I have a need to drive that way I'll stop for it.

I have only found a few ounces of wheel weights. I wish I could find as much as Crazy Tom as I would like to repurpose. I guess finding the live rounds would be even better. Save the melting, skimming, removing steel, casting, lubing and reloading.

How much are they worth?
Naturally you will want to know what we pay or how we determine what the balls are worth. The short answer is anywhere from 2 cents to $1.25 per ball. We can’t give you a definite dollar amount until we wash, whiten and separate the balls out according to the condition, brand and age. The better the balls the bigger the check. It doesn’t hurt to send in the lower grade balls as they are all worth something unless your dog has been chewing on them or the lawn mower chopped it.

When you sell used golf balls make sure you get the most and with us you will.

I use to find old golf balls and take them to a large field and hit them with a baseball bat. It is amazing how far they will fly.

1 pair of like new Monkey Wrench gloves, black with red trim. Washed them and
used them on this morning's ride.
4 hand towels and 1 dish towel in good shape. Washed and saved for things like changing oil.

There were plenty of balls on the road--balls of s#*t from the manure spreader going down the road. The only place I can recycle that is in my garden.

Some good steel thanks to two steel bars used to make cement forms. Holding them across the handlebars got them home.

Also found a smashed Samsung smart phone. It smarts to be run over!
