will you sort nickels?

Postby John_doe » Thu Mar 29, 2012 4:33 pm

when they change the composition? I have been stacking them for a while now, but I think I will continue to pick through them when they change the metal content.

Yes i will continue to sort. If the composition changes to steel it will be so easy to sort. Just run a magnet over them. ;)

I will continue to pick through them...,saving all the old style and some of the very best of the new style right at first, while they are
in near mint conditon. I suspect the new will be pretty flimsy.. :(

I have accumulated $10,000 in nickels... Now I have to sort them. The OCD in me wants to dump anything newer than 1960... I don't have the time though. Too many boxes of Halfs, dimes and pennies. I wish I had a 30 hr day. I am aiming to sort thru 500 coins a day ($25) slow and steady. I figure in a year it'll get done. Plus it'll be easier when it comes time to dump.

I will continue sorting. Right now I only save pre 60's and 09's so it doesn't matter to me what the composition of the other years are.

Wow. 10K in nickels?? Yikes. That's quite a few. I would assume that with that kind of money, you have silver or other precious metals as well? I don't know if I'll ever get that high, but time will tell I suppose.

I currently just keep nickels I get from change. I think in the future if a market began to develop for us nickles I may consider sorting them as well.

With the box of nickels I sort this coming week, I will have filled up my first "Tidy Cat" plastic container! :) It is already heavy to move, but I will keep this size of a container, no larger...otherwise it will to be difficult to move on my own. I've been separating them by decade, from the 60's on down. The 70's and above just go into the general stash (except for those elusive 09's).

I got a few thousand and growing. :D

when I first started I was only keeping pre 60's stuff, i've since decided to just start stacking the bricks. It is much more space effective that way. when they start making crud nickels this is all going to change though.

I'd be happy to sort nicks if a metal change occurs. I'm only sitting on a couple hundred face right now since there is no need to sort and no demand, but will sure jump in with both feet if they finally change nicks to steel!

One thing to consider here AND in Canada will be the circulation rate of nickels once pennies go away. At the moment they aren't moving very fast, but once pennies stop moving, nickels will start circulating more...which will mean more wear, as well as more people hoarding them in place of pennies.

After a few years have passed and most people have gotten rid of their pennies, it would even make sense to reduce the size of the nickel to something the size of our current pennies.

you can save a lot of time and effort by stacking before they change composition, but hey it's your game. ;)

Except that most all vending machines take nickels unlike pennies. I can't see vending machine companies et al being ok with this until it costs like $5 to buy a candy bar.

The size of the coin wouldn't matter to them, it's the quantity of coin that would be a problem if most vending machines accepted pennies.

In my spare time I'm sorting my nickels down by the decade. So far I have a full box of 1980's, 1990's, and 2000's. I have a few rolls from the 70's through the 50's and a few miscellaneous rolls for all others.

I'm thinking about going back through the 2000's to pull out the Westward Expansions series. But I'm doing that already with my current sortings. The coin from this series that I have the least is American Bison from the Denver mint. Since I'm on the east coast this is what I would have expected to find.

But in the meantime, I just stack my nickels up and forget about them until I get tired of going through my pennies and need a switch.
Don't look back. Something may be gaining on you.

Neither a penny or a nickel is worth face value anymore.

In my nickel searches thus far, I have found MANY 64's. I guess they are quite common?

I have boxes of 38-59... I normally do 2 boxes every other night. About 45 minutes to an hours while watching TV. Just looking for noticable errors, wars, Can. and of course xx-59....
I have been thinking about selling $100fv boxes of 38-59 (not searched through)... maybe this summer...

Ah, .. I also pull about 2-3$fv from each set of 2 boxes... It piles up quick... I think last year (6months of it) if I remember correctly I pulled $10fv or so of war nickels... It's all bleeding together since I really don't keep close count.
