Copper percentage went the wrong way !!

Postby theshoenlebens » Sat Mar 17, 2012 7:40 am

Well crap :x :x :x
Did my usual $50 penny sort and ended up with a total of..............77 COPPERS total. 1.5 %

Not my usual 25%-30%, at this rate my one ton goal will take awhile

Better to laugh than cry, right ????

Since you're beginning to get crappy boxes, I'd recommend weighing the boxes before you open then up. If they weigh significantly less than 15 lb, just return them to any bank. If they are over 15 lb, sort them. :)

If it's crappy $50 bags, then you do have a problem. :?

Got to return them to a coin machine at the bank so I have to open them anyways.
I knew I was in trouble when I didn't see any wheats while opening.

What the heck? The super sorter on the east coast is already causing issues in Ohio and Oregon?

We usually run around 20-25% so I am hoping that last bag was just a fluke but it sure made for some boring hand sorting.

OUCH!! sorry dude. I did a 2 credit union rotation today. drove 10 miles round trip. $20 CWRs each branch. got through 1st 20 at usual 28% with 8 wheats(1 shiny 1945s) and 3 dimes. with gas prices I should start to walk and maybe find some ground pennies!

Re: RATS-copper percentages $^##*%?@ UPDATE !! 3-22

Postby theshoenlebens » Thu Mar 22, 2012 6:23 pm

Went through another 5000 and got a total of>>>>>>drum roll please........34 coppers with three wheats.

Definitely going to wait this out but still makes for a boring Thursday,
BUT i did ask for some cwr and had only three but the teller said the lady that brought them in said they were wheat pennies.THEY WERE...three rolls, all wheats, so that made it more bearable. Going to go through and let you guys know if there is anything good.

That sucks to get them back so close to being dumped. I ask around at my pick up bank to try and figure out where my pennies come from, but it's little use. The one guy said you are getting the pennies that are dumped into the coin counters at our branches, the same guy who delivers our coin picks them up.

I dont think this is what is in our future for us in Texas but i did a $50 bag 6 weeks ago and got nearly 95% Cu....then three weeks ago a $50 bag yielded only 4 Cu cents....this past week back to the normal of 18%.

Last week to amount improved to around 200 coppers.

This week it went to approx. 600....so maybe things are going to start to get back to the normal 25-30 % in about ???? 6 weeks

Where abouts in Ohio are you? I dump at a bank in Clayton, so I'd avoid buying bags there. The timing is funny because I just dumped $80 in pennies a couple weeks ago at that branch.

Not a problem on the east coast. I'm still getting about 20% copper from Brinks boxes here in Virginia. Recently found a couple more 1909's and few indian heads.

I'm in southern Ohio and I dump at a larger chain bank (Fifth Third). I purchase the coins(in boxes, wish I could get bags) in a completely different town than where I dump. I asked the tellers how often thet change the bags and they stated 3 or 4 times a day. The boxes are from brinks so unless someone BIG is dumping I think i just need to stick it out and things will hopefully get back to normal. The dimes are still sticking at 1 or so per box....normal since I started.

If you are getting skunk Brinks boxes then they're likely from the Brinks supersorter.

If the town you are dumping your zincs at is serviced by the same coin supplier that you pick up at (look in the phone book) you may also be cross contaminating your pickups.

I asked HCBTT about that once and he told us that the risk of that is pretty low. I had concerns of dumping a ton of zinc pennies and ending up with them again in the near future.

He said sorting copper pennies is like fishing in a river where there is a constant influx of pennies coming in and the chance of you getting your own dump is pretty low

Whereas, sorting halves is like fishing in a lake; there is just a certain supply and the risk of you getting your own halves down the road is pretty high.

He can correct me if I am wrong :-)
