New Sorter

Postby deacon » Sun Apr 15, 2012 9:28 pm

Hello, I've been lurking for a while. This past week i bought two boxes of pennies. About 20% or so were copper, and I got almost a roll of wheats, and a roll of canadian pennies. There was a penny that was struck slightly off center. I have a bag of 82s that I haven't sorted yet.

I was able to fill my penny collection booklet, except for the 2009s, 2004-D and the 82s. I can't tell the difference between large and small dates, so for now they sit in a bag. Where are all the 2009s, and 2004-Ds?

I'm going to slowly dump my pennies with other coins so as not to arouse suspicion.

Anyway, thank you for giving me an interesting hobby.

It's fun to sort when you get a good mix. I get two boxes a week as well. I usually find 10-20 different 2009 per box, but sometimes just 5-10. They were hoarded!, many before they circulated.

Don't worry to much about suspicion, it's not to big a deal, I know what you mean because I still feel kind of weird when I go in and dump $50 in pennies.

Welcome!

20%'s not too bad. What state are you in? I've been getting around 12-14% in Texas.

Ouch, that's a dismal percentage.

Welcome to the club deacon, best of luck sorting!

Are the 2009 pennies hard to find as well? I haven't really noticed that while doing my searches. Come to think of it....guess I need to pay closer attention during my next sorting sessions! I'm guessing the mintage numbers were low for pennies as well as nickels?

Welcome! Wow that's a lot of wheats from only two boxes in comparison to what I get per box... about 6-10 average. Hope that it continues like that for you!!

A very nice start. I wouldn't worry about mixing in other coins with your dumps. As long as you keep your amounts relatively small and spread out you should be fine. What you want avoid is dumping at the same place where you pick your pennies, as it will likely draw some pointed questions.

Good luck.

When I walk in with a bunch of bags, the tellers look up and I say..."the FED called me and asked for their cents back" it gets smiles....my last dump was $450 worth. But they know me. Keep it small until they get used to you....and those wheats are great. Dont forget the candy or limeades once in a while....and never feed were you dump. Welcome to the mad house.

Thanks for all the advice. The 2009s have finally appeared.

I joined a credit union with a free coin sorter for members, so I have been dumping there. I buy boxes at a two branches of one bank. The Brinks boxes have been getting better. My next step will be figuring out the best way to store the copper.
