Old Jeff Nickel Question

I've been sorting some nickels lately with the goal of seeing how much of a Whitman I can fill in a short period of time. I've sorted about 3 boxes worth at this point and am only about 28 coins short of the set. I've read on here several times that those who sort nickels usually save any nickels dated before 1960 as these are harder to come by. I've been following this advice and now I've got a full roll (40 coins) of these older nickels. I have several duplicates and none of them are particularly rare (no war nickels or 50-d's or anything) but they are all dated 1959 or earlier. My question is, what do those who keep these nickels do with them? I have no need for them as I don't intend to put together another set this way. Is there demand for these on eBay or elsewhere? Is it worth it to try and sell them as a lot? Any advice on the topic is appreciated. If there's even a little money to be made, I'll save them as I sort. Otherwise the old ones may go back in with the rest of the dumps.

I just looked at the Fair market Price http://numismedia.com/fmv/prices/jefnkl/pricesgd.shtml and thought I would just save the dates and mints with 2x face in the lowest grade. Also it looks like 82,83 and 1984 both D and P are worth more than most of the ones from the sixties. Any one know why those year have worth?

In 1982 and 1983, there were no mint sets issued. So full BU coins from those years command some premium for collectors. But because of the nature of that "hole" being for pristine coins only, I don't think the premium exists for circulated examples. I don't know what the deal is with 1984.

I separate my nicks into 4 cats that are saved for later sale to local coin guys: 1950 - 1959; 1938 - 1949; War Nicks; Buffs; Libs. I am not attempting to grade anything and simply roll them as I get them.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I'll just hang on to them and find a buyer later on. If anyone has any interest, I now have a couple of rolls worth of these (1939-1959) nickels and would have no problem parting with them for not much over face and shipping. I plan on sorting more nickels in an attempt to fill up the rest of the holes in a blue book (I'm 25 holes short) so until I get most of those filled I'll keep amassing the old ones.

I think there's some money to be made on them, but you'll have to do it in large enough quantities that shipping won't eat all your profits. For someone who doesn't want to do all the work of roll searching to fill up their album, 1.5X face for a small flat rate box full of pre-60s might seem like a bargain.
