How much do you sort?

Postby My2Cents » Wed May 02, 2012 5:35 am

On a weekly basis, I sort about $600 in pennies and $1,500 in dimes. The dimes are almost tapped out where I am, so I'll bump my cents up to about $750 a week after that. It's hard to keep the Ryedale fed... and I spend the rest of my time re-rolling the zinc so I can turn them back in... cuz that's how they want em over there. If I didn't have to do that, I could easily do double that amount every week.

So how much do you sort?

Around 10k. everything but qtrs. dumping is easy for me, it's just a matter of how many bags I want to haul into the bank.

On average, I probably do $150/week between nickels and pennies. I'm a small-time hand sorter. When I’m having a stressful week, I’ll do upwards of $150 in just pennies (sorting is great at relaxing me). My dad (who helps me) will usually do about $100 in nickels a week. So, between the two of us, we probably average only about $250/week in pennies and nickels.

Every once-in-a-while, I’ll snag some halves and dimes from the CU, but not very often.

I hand sort $100 in pennies every week. I also search all the CWR and loose halves I can get my hands on.

$10 or so a week in pennies, $5000 to $6000 a week in halves.
If you are waiting for the "correction" to buy you need to realize that the increasing prices ARE the correction.

I've designated Monday nights, and sometimes saturdays for my sorting. Every week I just go to the bank and pick up as many bags as they have of pennies and nickels. It's usually around $200 in pennies and $200 in nickels. I have a ryedale so the pennies are done in about 2 hours but the nicks take longer and sometimes get backed up so I'll skip a week for those sometimes. Every once in a while I'll also order $1000 in halves when I have the extra money.
Pennies: $4200 - (0) indians - (5)steel - (1) George V Canadian
Nickels: $6500 - (62)war - (23)buf - (1)V nic - (4) key date jeff's
Dimes: $5000 - (24)roos - (2)merc - (2)AgCAN
Halves: $8000 - (7)'64 - (33)40% - (1)walker

I buy and sort what I'm able to afford each month. I try and get at least one box of nickels and 4 penny boxes. Small time for me, but I've noticed many people on here sort in the hundreds, or even thousands in various denominations each week. Yes, I'm a bit jealous because of that

I do pick up the occasional Silver from the US mint when I see something I like.

Nope.. I'm in IT... I have it down. Everything is on the way home or close at lunchtime. Maybe a few hours after work 2 or 3 times a week and a good saturday here or there. It only gets slow when I stack up on pennies. Anything over a 1000 and it starts slowing down. Plus the buckets start taking up room.

I normally do 10-20 boxes of pennies, 4-10 boxes of nickels maybe 6-9 of dimes and the rest halves. Halves normally is the bulk. I've been know to have a 40+ week but floating that much money around starts to get hard. I almost use 0 of my own cash.

Wow- those amounts are awesome. It looks like I'm definitely low man on the totem pole. I usually do $10-20 in pennies and $10-12 in nickels a week and occasionally pick up a few rolls of halves when the bank has them. It's not a lot, but a little is better than none.

i agree on the stress relief....except too much hand-sorting causes me to experience different stress....in the form of painful neck strain :(

Wow... there's some big money being moved every week around here. I wish I had access to half dollars here in Okinawa, but the pennies keep me busy enough. I'm turning 25-30% on those, so I'm saving about $150 in copper every week.

I've never had problems with neck strain (thank goodness), but I've got to either cut back, or change how I sort, because between working on a computer at work all day, and sorting at night, I think I'm starting to get carpal-tunnel.

Hopefully if I have to get a wrist/hand brace, the ladies will be impressed as I regale them with my war stories of sorting pennies.

One trick I tell new-sorters around here with no funds is to get an open-ended line of credit. You go down and draw money out, order your coins, sort/dump and put the money back in. It only costs a few bucks if you do it really fast. I think 2-4k for three days is about 6$. It's what I call the start with someone elses money. If you hit good for a few months you can pull enough profit and start another account with that profit. Then you don't have to draw on the line of credit. (which I still do when I order 20k+). It took me about a year to stash away 5k in profit for my slush account and after I get off of this hoarding spree I'll trade up and pull a little profit to build the account to about 30k to play with. All I might add did not come out of my paycheck. Yes theres the time and effort and gas but I don't count that.

usually about $50 a week by hand.

it's still just my relaxation at night. working on my 4th 6 gallon bucket.

side note: 'bout halfway through a $50 bag and it's by faar the best i've seen, estimated 60% copper, 1 indian head and probably about 20-22 wheats.

Mon, Wed, Fri - $4000 Halfs x 3
Tues, Thur - $1000 dimes x 2
Sat, Sun - $500-1000 pennies.
Average $15k a week, depending on what's coming in the banks. As long as I enjoy it I'll keep doing it. The minute it gets to be a job... I'll quit.

I don't understand. You're not sorting pennies since the price of silver is low?

Aren't silver coins from the bank still face value when you can find them?

I think he meant that he has ramped up silver sorting since silver shot up significantly compared to several years ago. I tried to get into silver sorting, but the return was so low that I have gone back to exclusively sorting pennies.

I've slowed down a bit over the past couple months...
Currently my average week is:
17K-20K in Halves
3K-4K in Dimes
100-200 in Cents (though admittedly I have 24 boxes queued up so I don't always get to these)
