Finally, a wild IH

Postby 68Camaro » Thu May 03, 2012 11:54 am

After 18 months of averaging sorting at maybe $100/wk, I finally found an 1890 IH in the wild!

It wasn't like I didn't believe you guys that keep finding them, but... I was beginning to wonder.

This one is nothing otherwise special. Fairly well worn. Not worth a photo attempt (which I'm bad at anyway). But cool to have been found.

I know how you feel.... took me a long time for my first one. I think I have 5 now and that is out of maybe 150k of pennies. I still haven't found an 09.

Congratulations. I have only found one, in many thousands of dollars worth of sorting. My friend (new member The_Tallness) found one in his second $25 box. Figures.
beauanderos wrote:Now try and find a flying eagle

Yeah right! Do you think that would be more likely in nickels? Because of thickness, composition, etc?

May I ask how many IH you have found in the wild? Being in Canada, I wonder if any IH were ever found up North? At any rate, at these odds I should not expect one in my lifetime.

As far fetched as it seems.... I found 2 in the same bank box after hand sorting just a couple hundred dollars worth.... and I got em here in Okinawa. Go figure.

But I'm glad you finally broke the barrier... maybe now they'll be plentiful for ya

Congrats on the find! I just found my 10th IH last night actually, I'd say I have been pretty lucky with those here in Nebraska. I'm guessing you have a harder time pulling older coins like this in Florida with higher population and coins changing hands more often.

I've noticed that it seems to trend by area, but not sure why. I can find 09s here - probably have at least 4 or 5 found during the period of zero IHs.

I'm amazed at that. So what's the coin situation there? Is there new coin coming in to supply banks/payroll, or is it more same coin recirculating? Seems like it would tend to be more trapped there, but maybe not. How easy is it to get coin?
