Federal Reserve inspectors used to weigh all coins that banks deposited in the Fed’s vaults across the country, including one in Doral. That ended in 2003 when the Fed decided to end its vigilance against being short-changed and stopped weighing pennies and nickels. Instead, penny and nickel deposits are marked as “said to contain” whatever the banks submitted.

Interesting stuff.

Reminds me of the pre-1933 propoganda about gold and silver.

Why would anyone want to lug around ounces of gold and silver when they can use pieces of paper redeemable for gold and silver. $20 per gold ounce, and $1 per silver ounce paper, greatest invention since sliced bread.

Right. Now stick it in a toaster and see what comes back out.

Why not ban the Federal Reserve, restore the 97% purchasing power we lost due to their incompetence making the cent profitable once again, and keep our monetary system the way it was designed to be?

We stay down this road, and eventually, following it to it's logical end, first will be the cent, then the nickel, then the dime and before you know it we will have NO CURRENCY, as even the notes will be too expensive to print. Just ask Zimbabwe...

2.4 hours a year dealing with pennies? I waste 2.4 hours a years staring at those "give a penny, take a penny" trays at the gas station and wondering if the number of coppers in it would be worth the awkwardness of cleaning it out for a couple dimes. :?

The best... Pennies are worth less than CA minimum wage - pennies are so worthless now that it doesn't even pay the California Minimum Wage of $8/hour to pick them up off the street.

IMO, the reason people save two dollar bills is because they are perceived to be rare. My grandfather saved every darn $2 FRN he ever got and most were in an almost or uncirculated state. I went to the LCS whom I trust very much and he told me their worth.....$2. Apparently there are vaults somewhere stacked with uncirculated $2 bills.... The only bills he were interested in were consecutive serial numbers, the star notes, and the silver certificates. Apparently they have value over face.

Wonder if it took the owner or workers at Mike's Bikes more than 2.4 hours to make the sign and do the research for the figures they cite.

There was a liquor store on campus in Madison, WI years ago that had a sign that read:

PENNIES

We don't take 'em.
We don't give 'em.

Don't like it?

(Map to a liquor store two blocks away)

They rounded to the nearest nickle and never had any problems as far as I know.

My LCS gives $2 bills as change. Brand new crisp bills. A guy I work with loves them and buys them from me (for face, he's not dumb). I don't mind schlepping them around, it's like the guys who buy bags of wheaties and pay them in change and drop them on the ground to try to get new people interested in our hobby.

Even when it's to your advantage when they round down? Like this store is. So you would be happier if they raised the price back up? You would rather drive out of your way wasting time and gas just because they had the audacity to lower the price a few cents on principle?

So, cut one's own nose off their face to spite oneself... To each their own...
