First time

I'm about to crack open a box of nickels, but I just realized I don't know what I'm looking for. I know war nickels and 2009s, but what else should I keep an eye out for?

Add the premium that some coin guys pay for pre 1960 Jeffs. I get $6/roll for '50-'59, and $8/roll for '38-'49. There are errors aplenty. The most common I find is the clipped planchet. Minor clipping, yes, but it raises the value to my regulars to at least $1 each. Altered coins, such as "hobo nickels" can be worth up to several $10's if your customer base can get into a bidding war, but typically about a buck or two. Laminated coins, such as the two headed penny I found last week was created by someone with machinist skills and can get typically about $2. Have to keep your eyes open and have a group of collector types to ask questions of. Enjoy

I got a few westward journey and the newer buffalos, not anything else really. I'll hang on to the nickels for the sake of nickel :)
