Do you save any of the National Parks/Territories quarters?

Do you save any of the National Parks/Territories quarters?

Postby HPMBTT » Tue Aug 16, 2011 2:02 am

I usually don't sort quarters, but I decided to give it a go the other day, as the teller said that the owner of several laundromats brought in $600 worth, which I don't normally see. Nope, didn't find any silver quarters (I still have yet to find one in the wild). But I did notice some with nice and shiny edges and pulled out what appear to be almost-new National Parks quarters (ie Yosemite), as well as some of the Territories quarters (ie Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands).

Just curious...is there a premium on these in AU/BU condition (loose singles) ? How about a premium on BU rolls? Do you save any of them and if so, which ones? I was looking at the mintages and they are definitely lower than the state quarters (1999-2008), but not extremely low mintages. Just curious. A 'quarter' for your thoughts, anyone?? :)

No, there is no point in saving them. Greysheet lists the rolls for like $13/roll for BU rolls but you would be lucky to be able to sell them for $11/roll. If you get a BU box you might try ebay but the market is pretty much dead. Even the state quarter rolls that used to sell for $40+/roll are now down in the $20/roll range and keep going down. Almost EVERYONE started collecting these.....way to many BU's out there to become valuable.

Thanks for the tip, highroller. I'm tempted to just throw them back in the wild. Anyone else care to comment?

If I'm lucky enough to find them in the first place, I save them. Any quarters made 2009-present are few and far between.

Just because you can't find them in circulation by you doesn't mean they aren't out there.

This year alone so far... http://mintnewsblog.com/2011/08/us-mint ... july-2011/

I'd save a few of the best of the best and practice catch and release with the rest. Great design idea by the US Mint, but just another gimmick.

Even the silver proofs trade for silver value only by the roll. Oh well.

Would it be wiser to buy and save the silver proof sets? I personally love silver proof state/natl. park quarters!

Also from USA Today --http://www.usatoday.com/money/economy/2010-10-07-quarter07_ST_N.htm
National park quarters hard to find; blame the slow economy

By Sandra Block, USA TODAY
When the Arizona state quarter was issued two years ago, Carolina Butler of Scottsdale, Ariz., gave rolls of the quarters to her children, grandchildren — even her plumber.

So Butler was delighted to learn that Congress had authorized the U.S. Mint to issue coins honoring 56 national parks, including the Grand Canyon. "A roll of quarters costs $10," she says. "They make the best gifts."

Since April, the Mint has introduced quarters commemorating Hot Springs, Yellowstone, Yosemite and Grand Canyon national parks. But while the Grand Canyon quarter was released last month, Butler has been unable to find a single Grand Canyon coin. Her bank, Wells Fargo, told her it hasn't received any of the quarters. It seems the economic downturn is to blame.

GET MORE INFO: Buy quarters, see upcoming coins and release dates

During recessions, cash-strapped consumers raid their piggy banks and other sources of loose change, says Beth Deisher, editor of Coin World magazine. That puts more old quarters into the system, reducing demand for new ones.

That certainly appears to be what's happening now. As of August, the Federal Reserve had 3.2 billion quarters in inventory, which is sufficient to meet estimated demand for the next four years. "The Fed is holding a whole lot of inventory, and banks aren't demanding it," says Mint spokesman Michael White.

By contrast, the 50 State Quarters Program, which lasted from 1999 through 2008, was a huge numismatic success. By the end of the program, an estimated 147 million people had collected state quarters, says Mint spokesman Gordon Hume.

The dearth of national park quarters is "very frustrating, especially for collectors, because they can't get the coins at their local bank," Deisher says. "It's really a shame because the whole idea is a circulating commemorative that you could get at face value."

Collectors who don't want to wait until the Fed reduces its inventory can buy national park quarters from the Mint, but they'll have to pay more than face value. A two-roll set of 80 Grand Canyon National Park quarters costs $32.95, according to the Mint's website.

That's more than Butler is willing to pay. "I'm not a collector," she says. "I'm just a grandma."

on the 2011 quarters I wonder why they made so many of the Chickaswa ones? Looks like they doubled the other mintages

2011 America The Beautiful Quarter Production

Design Denver Philadelphia Total
Gettysburg National Military Park 30,400,000 30,800,000 61,200,000
Glacier National Park 31,200,000 30,400,000 61,600,000
Olympic National Park 30,600,000 30,400,000 61,000,000
Vicksburg National Military Park 33,400,000 30,800,000 64,200,000
Chickasaw National Recreation Area 69,400,000 73,800,000 143,200,000
Grand Total

And I hardly find any of the 2010's or 2011's in change

The 2010 and 2011 quarters are hard to find. There's a market for the uncirculated rolls. You won't get rich, but turning 20% profit on a flip should be no problem.

There are 5 designs a year, depicting 1 national park or national site from each state, the federal district, and each territory. The states have a hand in picking the designs I think. So Yellowstone was selected for Wyoming. We'll see recreation areas, national forests, military parks, even a shrine.

America the Beautiful Quarters will be issued depicting designs of national parks and sites in the order of which that park or site was deemed a national site. The quarters from four different states will depict parks or sites that were previously portrayed on the state quarters (Grand Canyon in Arizona, Yosemite in California, White Mountains in New Hampshire, and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota). Though they will depict the same sites, they must bear new designs.

The only National Park coin that showed up here in Central KY in any quantity was the Glacier quarter. The rest are rare as hen's teeth.

Here in North AR I have been able to find all except Yellowstone and Yosemite. I am filling a book for my grandson so thats how I know which ones I haven't found. The rest except the Gettysburg I have had several examples. Gettysburg I found only one. I guess the other two I will have to buy off ebay but imo, the national parks quarters aren't rare in my area.

I save most of them that I find in good condition, but that doesn't mean much because... A) I don't find that many, and B) I'm a bit of a packrat. Is there a lot of value in them? I doubt it. But I still like them.

I do collect these as well. I have a "collectors" map of them. Filled in all of the states except Puerto Rico (still need that one). The quarters that I place in the map are just common circulated in decent condition. I have been buying the Silver Proof sets of them every year since they've come out. I do the same with the National Park ones too. Just fun to collect, I know the common ones won't be worth much. Maybe the proof ones some years into the future. Who knows.
