I just hit $1000 hoarded copper. Should I sell?

Postby CrazyTom » Sun Jun 17, 2012 9:53 am

I have them neatly rolled and in $25 dollar boxes.

Is that the best way to ship if I have a buyer?

Please PM me.

Selling is up to you. I sell because I sort more than I can keep.

I ship in medium flat rat boxes. 10 ziplock bags inside a canvas bag, double boxed with duct tape covering the inner box. Some people use coinlock bags inside. Tape them heavy!

I'd suggest getting a ton or so under your belt before considering selling. You never know...

IMO, I would hold and continue to stack.

I am leaning toward this too, since the price is down so much since I first started to sort. It was nothing for people to get 2X face when I first started sorting and saving on a consistant basis. Now it looks like most are lucky to just get 1.5 if even that... so,,, it probably is best to hold on for a while....

I suppose it all depends on how old you are. If you are younger I would keep stacking until the market gains some liquidity and you can get melt value or even melt plus a premium.

Nobody knows your own financial situation better then you do.

So the questions to ask yourself first are, do I need the money right now? If you’re behind on your bills or have high interest credit card debt, then signs point to yes. If the answer is no, you don’t need the money, then no reason to sell quickly.

Next question, what is your objective? Do you plan to keep adding to your hoard? Or are you tired of it just want to part ways?
Answer those questions and you’ll figure it out.

Good advice all!

I have no need to sell and now my goal is one ton.

If I did sell I would just buy silver with it. I will always keep some for
financial meltdown ( just around the corner ).

Here we are TEN YEARS later. If I may ask, did you sell? If so, hopefully you did well. And if so, you can still harvest some more out of bank rolls.

The real secret here is that there's actually only a single poster. Copper toxicity induced psychosis makes us all think that our individual personalities are actually separate people.

I believe that is the song "I am the Walrus" by the Beatles. Feel free to correct.

Yeppers.

In a roundabout way, Recyclersteve is right though. That initial line came to John during an LSD trip.

Trivia (of the quasi-possible-myth-kind): "I am the Walrus" was written in response to some fan mail that told John that Beatles' songs were being analyzed in English classes. John reportedly responded to the news by finishing up the lyrics to the song (at the time, he only had the first two lines), and saying " “Let the f***ers work that one out!"

Possible myth, but Lennon was a master at that writing stuff like that... Strawberry Fields, Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds, Come Together, etc. My dad told me about the first time he heard Strawberry Fields on the radio back in late 1966, he was like: "This is the Beatles?" I'm sure many other people reacted the same way. Drugs (mainly LSD) changed their entire writing style.

Back to the topic at hand.

2,000 lbs. of solid copper would fill up almost 27 one gallon milk cartons. Since you can’t fill all the space with pennies, it would realistically take something like 35-40 cartons. Of course, I wouldn’t trust a milk carton to hold 74.61# of copper without breaking. (Stats from aqua-calc.com)

My point is that a ton of copper presents logistical issues. It might be hard to sell it all at one time in your area without paying for shipping. And even all that would be a small percentage of living expenses for a year and a very small percentage compared to, say, the value of an average house.

I have a decent amount of Canadian and foreign .999 nickel coins, but the downside there is that nickel in under appreciated by the masses. Maybe Elon Musk and others clamoring for more nickel for the auto business and elsewhere will finally get people to listen. But this could take a while.

Now even 100# of silver would be worth MUCH MORE and likely be easier to move and sell. But the downside is that it would be a lot easier for a thief to get it and fairly expensive to insure (likely around 4% of value per year in insurance premiums).

Gold- oh my. Even 10# is worth well over $200k. But I’m sure someone would spend a decent amount of time authenticating it before buying. I’d be nervous about accepting a check for that amount!
