1911S Wheat......I think???

Postby TheJonasCollegeFund » Sat Jun 02, 2012 6:58 am

I thought I had found another 1911D but as I looked through the loupe, the worn cent's mintmark now looks like an "S".

Here's the question....if it is an "S" instead of a "D" does the fact that it's so worn that the naked eye can't tell....does this just make it a hole filler or does it still have some value?

I'll get a picture later.

Ideally, you'd want to be able to read a date with the unaided eye, even on a coin graded AG3.

So, yes - coins that require magnification to discern date & mintmark (including damaged specimens)...Consider them hole fillers.

That "rule" could be bent somewhat for exceptionally rare dates.

If it's undeniable what it is - meaning it is readable and unmistakable - with typical magnification (like a 10x or less magnifying glass that most coin collectors should have), then it's worth something. This is a semi-key coin. I don't have one, and would be willing to part with a few bucks for it. There are always people looking for low grade key Lincolns.

Haha... well, to narrow it down, I like coins. But seriously, I have a set of Lincolns in 2x2's that I am building, and then two Whitman books - one for each of my girls. So I'm kind of building three sets...
