Nickel Wisdom?

Postby SilverDragon72 » Wed May 02, 2012 12:26 pm

So my latest thought with collecting nickels is this...I'm contemplating saving one tube of EACH nickel I can find. I've already amassed a small hoard of them, so it would be something different. Every year, S or D mint. I know the value of most of these nickels isn't a whole lot, but I think it would be kind of cool to say that you own 50 nickels from the present year and back. Of course, some of the old nickels will be a challenge to fill, but gotta try, right? ;)

Maybe in another 20 years, they could be worth quite a bit, especially if the composition changes.

Whatever motivates you and keeps you stacking base metal coins! With interest rates so low, there is miniscule downside and an unknown upside to hoarding base metal coins.

So I began my nickel sorting project.....it took me a couple hours just to sort through and separate each nickel type. I only managed to get like...6 rolls done. This will take me quite a while to do.

I sorted a whole box yesterday and made some decent progress on my nickel project. I found 3 2009D's, and one war nickel :) I came across my first brilliant set of 2012's too!
Filled many tubes, sorted by decade and mint mark!

I do nickels every week. If/when the composition changes I wonder how many boxes of pre 60's I'll have? One never knows but until then, I'll keep stacking pre 60's.

I have a small amount of 50's and below sorted away also. Not enough to fill up any tubes yet, but I'll keep on going! ;)

Please forgive my ignorance, but what is significant about pre-1960's nickels? The composition is the same other than war nickels. Is there something numismatic about them?

Not really, other than the fact that they're already half a century old and getting hard to find in circulation.

That's what I'm thinking! Not worth a whole lot, but fun to collect anyway.

I love collecting pre 60 nickels. I sit on my deck with a couple beers, radio playing, enjoying the sun, and go through boxes or bags of them. I put them into rolls of 39-49 (minus wars of course) and 50-59. Makes my day when I add another roll to my stack. I go through $500 -700 a week in nickels. Think I'm going to do a few Whitman books here soon. Guess its the OCD in me
Oh, this is the worst-looking hat I ever saw. What, when you buy a hat like this I bet you get a free bowl of soup, huh?

Oh, it looks good on you though.

I save all my pre 1960 nickels also. We don't have to have a good reason to do what we do.

The fun part about tubing your finds is you find trends. We tube all of are pre 59 cents. And after four years of tubing we are five times more likely to find a IH cent than a 1954 cent see -- http://www.realcent.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5364&hilit=+1954. Also here on the west coast the "P" are hard to find. And for a great price on tubes I have found tis Ebay seller does a great job. http://www.ebay.com/sch/Coins-Paper-Money-/11116/i.html?_ipg=&_sac=1&_from=&_nkw=&_armrs=1&_ssn=jandpcollectibles

I've been saving all my pre 1960 nickels also. Only need the 38-S, 39-D and 50-D to complete a set from circulation.

So I went to local coin store today....and found it was quite busy. A couple had brought in an old coin collection....among the finds were approximately 2 dozen buffalo nickels in various condition, MANY Wheat pennies (200 at least) and some other types of silver coins. Didn't buy anything from the collection....but then I got to thinking, maybe I should go back and acquire some of those items.

Thoughts?

A Buff in the hand is worth more than sorting a box.
Get all the nice ones you can.

Don't forget to look for key date Wheats while you're there.
I'd gladly send you 2 dated Buffs for a 1914-D!

Get as much Ag as you can for melt + a reasonable bit, but remember to check for key dates too!
