Buying a big load to scrap.

I have found a place that has whole AC units by the Tractor trailer load. The down side is you have to take a whole load. I have asked them to contact me.

The question is have any of you ever done a purchase like this? How did it work out for you?

Ac units can be a gold mine if you are willing to do the work, and do it right. The first thing you have to check out is to see if all the freon has been removed. If not, leave. It will cost more to remove and recycle the freon than the scrap value of the unit. That is if you have to pay someone to do it. If you are certifide to do it yourself, than maybe.

So do you have to pay for these units? How much?

We used to scrap HVAC equipment for three big companies in Omaha when we first started scrapping full time.

You can get a lot of good stuff out of ac units too.
motors,
AL fan blades
copper pipe
brass valves
wire
stainless steel
silver

the list goes on.

In one year we scrapped over 17,000 pounds of clean AC coils, and were happy back then to be getting .55 cents a pound!

I have not gotten the price yet. I have been buying units from local shops and doing well on them, that is why I would not mind finding a steady source. The down side is haveing to buy a full truck load. I have no experence with getting a full trailer brought in and being just me I would have to rent the trailer for a week or two while unloading the units.

Where is the silver? Seen a post a while back that said there is some in the end loops in the solder.

Yes in the end loops, but also better sorce will be in the contact points on the HV relays.

I will check out the relay, I had gave them a once over did not notice it, thought they were just copper.

Got into railroad salvage where the real money is!

Why work all day for $300.00 when you can make 10 times that in a day scrapping railroad track?

I am real happy at 300 a day, been making $20 or less a day for the last year.

Are all the loops silver solder or just some? How can I tell the difference?

Do you scrap Rail or trains and cars? Would love to see some pics of what you do.

The end of the coils that have the soldered loops, there is silver solder used there. How much I do not know as we never saved any of them back in the day.

Mostly track, but we have cut up some cars, locomotives, bridges, etc.
