Will zinc pennies melt in a campfire?

Postby scyther » Tue Jul 03, 2012 8:59 pm

A couple weeks ago I had two pennies stuck together with gum or something. One was an '82 (probably copper) and the other was a zinc shield penny. I recovered the '82 from the fire with the burned gum still stuck on it. I easily chipped off, just as planned. I did not find the other penny, even after searching through all the ashes for a few minutes.

Did it melt or did I just lose it?

I have three more pairs of stuck-together pennies that I am considering burning...
267,500 pennies and 186,000 nickels searched. Hand sorter.

:32 shows the melted zinc cents. Looks like a cast iron pan on a wood fire. Another one of their videos shows their zinc ingots.

Zinc melts at 800F, and Copper at 2000F.

You could, but would not want to. Zinc fumes are toxic.
