Just as long as you guys don't go buying up all the pennies while you are here. Actually, it is against the rules to transport cans from one state and sell them in a state with redemption.

I'm pretty sure its about 50 cents per pound or more in most places. Aluminum cans are a great grade aluminum because they have to pass a number of strength test, my favorite of which is the air transportation test.
When a can of pop is flown in a cargo plane, the air pressure on the out side of the can changes drastically, but the inside is at or greater than 1 atm. So when a can goes in the air, because of the difference in pressure, it would normally explode. To fix this, all cans have a special design feature: The bottom of the can is a popping mechanism. So when a can of coke is flown from Atlanta to Los Angeles it looks all lopsided, and the handy groove that helps you stack them is folded out.

theirrationalist, interesting facts about the cans. Do you know by chance, are the cans pure aluminum, or are they slightly alloyed with anything else? Is it safe to say an alum can is .995 alum and the rest is paint and the inner latex coating? I have considered melting the cans myself, but have been discouraged from doing so with a makeshift crucible because of the toxicity and slag from the paint and coating, coupled with their tendency to quickly oxidize. I may stil do it down the road if I can ramp things up on the refining side, but I'm still doing the research.

Actually aluminum cans, like lets say coke cans, are actually made of 97.9% aluminum, and the rest of the alloy is magnesium and manganese.

.55 a pound in Eastern Missouri. Our local shop seems to be very low compared to others I see here. I don't plan to cash my hoard in anytime soon, but when I do, I think I'll do some looking around first.

California--.05 each for cans 23oz and smaller. .10 each for cans 24 oz and larger. For this price cans cannot be flattened and must be hand feed one at a time into a scanning machine.

Must be just in your area. They can be flattened where I live and they will redeem them at at least $1.57 per pound.. which is that the DOC has determined is equal to 1 pound at the nickel per can rate. Or if you shop around you can find a place that pays more because they are paying the CRV rate plus something for the scrap value. Or you can just hoard them and wait for the price to go up.
