Morgan Dollar Decision (POLL)

Postby Rodebaugh » Tue Jul 31, 2012 8:50 am

So I collect morgan dollars. I have a decision to make. I think I have the answer but I wanted to see what my fellow RCers thought.
I have a 1879-S PCGS MS-65 in my collection. It is Bright White with a great strike and is in my opinion a MS-65 all day long. In my notes I have it as “A” quality.
So I get back an order yesterday from PCGS. It contains a 1879-S PCGS MS-64. This coin is beautiful with lots of frost and light purple to orange bullseye toning. It is also struck very well. It is “A+” quality in my book. Simply gorgeous.

So do I down grade my set and take in the MS-64 beauty toner or do I keep that slot filled with a very Nice White “A” quality MS-65?

I'll try and get some pics up this evening.

Keep both! Or, if the 64 is really that nice, crack and re-submit? Why are you asking us anyway? We are supposed to ask YOU questions about Morgans :D

Just got the 64 back....It was in a ANACS 63. It is a Super Nice 64 but would be a average to below average 65. It's where it belongs, upgrade is very unlikely.

had the 65 for a while (also one of my submits) it is a higher end 65 as well just white.

The thought is I have a more exspensive coin and better score on my PCGS registry w/ the 65. But I like the looks of the 64 so much that I am thinking about taking the downgrade.

As stupid as this sounds: The Poll Doesn't really have to do with morgans as much as personal collecting behavior.

Collect the coin not the holder, young padawan. Don't overthink the force of the coin. Relax and the coin will find its way to you.

The color is the the 64
The White is the 65

Although nice on the PC...the color looks MUCH better in person. The marks also tend to show up more as a result of the heavy frost IMO.

I have a hard time believing these to graded so closely.
I had an 83cc once I'll never forgive myself for giving up.

The toning on the cheek scratches is too much of a distraction on the 64.

I'm not going crazy myself over the color patterns for the 64. I would stick with the 65, but hey I always liked the bright whites better myself.....

65 won out. The 64, which looks so much better in hand than that crappy photo above, is now listed in my sale inventory.

One last photo......a better one I might add....off to some one elses collection :(
