No Big Deal but found my Fifth 1909 Cent for the Year

Postby TheJonasCollegeFund » Wed Aug 22, 2012 1:39 am

I ran to my pick-up bank today and walked out with 4 of their $50 penny bags. I'll grab the other 3 in the morning. Well, I started running them through the Ryedale and I spotted an older looking wheat while sifting through the pennies on a lookout for any and everything that might cause a jam. Some interesting items have been found recently!

Anyway, I grab the wheat and it's a 1918S. Cool.....teen wheat with a mintmark!! So, while the Ryedale keeps working without jamming, I keep looking for wheats and everything else! The bags are not that good so far for copper. I see freakin' tons of "Shields" looking back at me. I start to get down a bit. But soon I find another old wheat looking at me

1909....no VDB......no "S".....but still a plain 1909 and in decent shape! Cool!

Now just that one little wheat makes me feel better about this lower than average copper run. I'll be lucky to hit 20%!

I've found an average of about 10 wheats per 25$ box of pennies (unable to get bags at the banks I use). But lately, for the past couple months, all wheats have been in the 41-58 range. Good finds on the 1909 and 1918 S! Congrats! .. specially if they are in good condition. That's great.

I'm guessing, being a lowly hand sorter :D , that I am still running around 28% - 30% copper...specially when I weigh in the 1982s. But I'm seeing more and more of those ugly shields too (just my artistic opinion on the new penny reverse design) :D

Now let's see ... where is that blasted cat! I'm hungry. woof, whine, drool, sniff ... 'here kitty, kitty, kitty, nice kitty. Where are you little kitty?

I finished with the 4 $50 bags and went and did the dump thing! These bags got me 23%. $46 face in copper. So far 57 wheats and 31 Canadian coppers/non-coppers!

I'm usually closer to 30% but I think I am starting to get someone else's dumps.

The 1909, 1917, 1918S, and 1920 are the earliest wheats so far. :D :D :D :D :D :D

*Jealous* -- I have yet to find a 1909 in the wild.

Wouldn't handsorters be more likely to find rare coins, since they actually look at them all rather than just running them through a machine?
267,500 pennies and 186,000 nickels searched. Hand sorter.

What the hell is this?
If I have the gift of prophesy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to move mountains but do not have love I am nothing. And if I give all my possessions to feed the poor, and if I surrender my body to be burned but do not have love it profits me nothing.
