Never heard the following before:

Interesting:

On March 9, 1933, the statute was amended to declare (as it remains today) that “during time of war or during any other period of national emergency declared by the President,” the President may regulate or prohibit (under such Rules and regulations as the President may prescribe) the hoarding of gold bullion. This included gold coinage.

Hopefully this is enough to get some of your questions answered. If anyone else does an internet search, please post the links. My eyes are tired now and my patience worn to nothingness after doing battle with this computer and the ISP to try to find anything on this subject.

I found this interesting:

"The design [of the Peace Dollar] came very close to reappearing once more in 1964, when Congress authorized production of 45 million new silver dollars, apparently in an effort to serve the needs of Nevada gambling casinos. With the smaller silver coins rapidly disappearing from circulation, this was viewed as a gift to special interests. After the Denver Mint produced 316,076 Peace dollars (dated 1964) in May of 1965, the authorization was rescinded by order of President Johnson. Although all pieces were to be recalled and melted, rumors persist of several coins surviving."

.
the story of the 1964 Peace dollars was in Coin World a few year back.

I wonder where the few pieces of 1964 that survived are now.

Daniel Carr of state quarter and Moonlight Mint fame will sell you a 1964 Peace dollar. Interesting story on these overstruck fantasy coins.
