2002 - 2012 half dollars

Postby snahster » Thu Sep 06, 2012 11:40 pm

Hi everyone-

I've been searching for silver halves for a while now and have a question about 2002-2012 half dollars. Is anyone saving them? I've noticed that they have low mintages, and many that I find have a mirror-like finish. I am no coin collecting pro, but I'm just wondering if anyone sees the value, now or in the future, of saving these halves on the premise that they are "rare" (though I seem to find an aweful lot).

Let me know your thoughts!

The fewer people that are saving them, the higher the price(theoreticly) will be. Given that you see many will a pf- like finish, you would need to save the best of the best of the coins.

Well, it seems to me that the only reason these are in circulation is because collectors buy bags straight from the mint and search through for the best of the best then they spend the rest into circulation. So any that we're seeing in circ, have already been tossed once as not good enough, therefore they probably aren't worth saving. Or is there another means by which these enter circulation? Any thoughts?

I think people bust sets open to spend them. Add in the comparatively low TOTAL mintage of halves, and the proof halves seem to pop up more often.

I collect a P and D for each year for my whitman book. Beyond that they just get spent.
