whats my catalytic converter worth?

i had an '02 vw that i modded and the exhaust was one of the mods. i called down to a scrap yard to see what they would give me foir the cat and they said $20, i thought they were worth more? i didnt think theives would be targeting them for $20

You have to understand that thieves focus on stuff that nets them the quickest cash possible in order to help them satisfy a "need" with the least effort possible. This is why you hear of catalytic cutting, copper wire/pipe/sheathing/whatever stealing, etc. etc. It's easy to grab/cut/steal, and to sell for a profit, even if the result is peanuts.

Looks like they categorize VW as a "low grade import" which would pay $46 each for quantities less than 10.
