Well depending on available time you could "magnet sort" out the steel pennies,
re-roll them (re-use the rolls you get them in) and cash those before you leave.
If you don't want to re-roll you might have to give up 12% in fees to coinstar
to pour it in and let it count it. You could spend them at a Safeway store with
a self check out but if you do this don't dump more than 600 of them on any
one self check out machine or they start jamming up. (Usually around the
700 mark.)
You can leave the Zinc and Copper (niether of which will stick to a magnet)
in a bag and leave the sorting of those until you are home and have more
time because...
As Scyther said, Zinc you can mix into your U.S. zinc dumps. Just don't put too
many in any one dump. They'll then circulate and re-circulate around the U.S.
for a much longer life over many years. ^_^ You'll save the U.S. mint the cost
of making more replacement pennies. You'll loose a bit because the CDN$ is
slightly over right now but not much if you change your money at whichever
bank has the best rate.
Steel cents could be hard to unload in the U.S. as it doesn't match the
(current) composition of any U.S. pennies and some counting equipment
will catch them on a magnet.
