Getting closer on a found in the wild Lincoln Set!

Postby henrysmedford » Wed Oct 10, 2012 10:05 pm

My son Franklin has been pulling wheat's for five years now and has been doing a wild find only set for his brother Theodore and found a 1925-D today first hole filler in a long time. After five years and all found from here in Medford Oregon he needs to find only eighteen more to have a full Harris folder set. He need to find only--
1909-S VDB
1909-S
1910-S
1911-S
1912-D
1912-S
1913-D
1913-S
1914
1914-D
1914-S
1915
1915-D
1915-S
1924-D
1931-D
1931-S
1932
Who would have thought you could find all of the one he has so late in the game!

Wow. I have been thinking about doing this as well. Mostly just because I find the occasional perfect-looking early memorial.
Using the mintages of the coins you have yet to find, I would have guessed Franklin would have found the 1914 and maybe even the 1915 by now:
1914 75,238,432
1915 29,092,120
(1925-D 22,580,000)
1915-D 22,050,000
1913-D 15,804,000
1912-D 10,411,000
1932 9,062,000
1913-S 6,101,000
1910-S 6,045,000
1915-S 4,833,000
1931-D 4,480,000
1912-S 4,431,000
1914-S 4,137,000
1911-S 4,026,000
1924-D 2,520,000
1909-S 1,825,000
1914-D 1,193,000
1931-S 866,000
1909-S VDB 484,000
And he's found the 23S, 22D, 33D, and even the 26S? Those all have mintages under 10 million!
I have found a 15D and a 32 plain this year. Hmmm... Maybe I should start the Wild Challenge too!

what kind of sorting volume is he doing. His finds will be commensurate with his volume, improving his odds the greater amounts that he does, tho perhaps only minimally. One regions "finds" don't dry up when great dates are gleaned... there is a constant trickle of good dates (as well as more common ones) that enter the copper pool due to any number of reasons. Great finds, Franklin   :D

I started to wonder so I had to look....here's the ones I haven't found yet in the wild....09s, 09s vdb, 10s, 11s, 12d, 12s, 13s, 14d, 14s, 15s, 16s, 22, 23s, 24d, 24s, 26s, 27s, 31s, 33d, 40s

Then I compared our lists and wondered if Franklin has indeed found a 1922 no D already....that would be an amazing find.....congrats to him if he has...

No hole in Harris and Whitman folders for the 1922 no D. In Franklin's Dansco he has the 1909-S VDB and the 22 plain from China from Ebay. :o

Congrats to you all.

I've been doing the same off and on for years (started when I was 5, but several decade long gaps) and have a lot more holes than those (though I suspect they include most of all of the same ones). In the past year of resorting by hand all my machine sorted cents I've found 3 or 4 of the holes(and upgraded the condition of more), but plenty more left. I am quite sure it will remain incomplete at my death but it's the hard thing to do. Anyone can just buy them.

Franklin is almost twenty years old up until he was 18 I took Mondays off to watch him and we would go to the banks. Franklin will go to the banks some times and get a few coins here and there.
