Looks close to what I got yesterday.

Boy, steel has really dropped. I think that is an indicator of a declining economy.

I am suprised you didnt get more for your motor. Did it have plastic on it?

I am suprised you didnt get more for your motor. Did it have plastic on it?

It was heavy sheet metal steel. Maybe they pay more for structural steel. I was expecting more than I got (like twice as much more. )

The motor had a plastic fan on it that I broke off. I was in the process of cutting away the frame to get to the copper wire when I discovered it was not copper wire. That should not have mattered 'cause they would shred it anyway.

That is True. It costs me approx 300 dollars to ship a 20' container (~40,000#) of scrap to china. It costs close to $2000 to bring something in on a semi (48,000#) from Chicago. Rail is a option b/c the rail cars can carry a couple hundred thousand pounds of material, but it takes a long time compared to the other options.
As of right now we bring in rail cars from around the country and then blend them on the west coat and then ship them overseas.
In 2008 I watched companies that had been in business for generations close due to the copper market. Domestic companies shipped copper to china. By the time the material got there the price had dropped so much that the customers backed out of their agreements. They said... We aren't taking the metal. Ship it back. Letters of credits, promises, contracts in the end meant nothing. If someone wants to screw you they will figure out a way. Our entire system of business is for honest people. Someone who is dishonest will always figure out how to circumvent the rules.

They will shake hands on a deal and immediately shop it.

I once attempted to run a furniture deal out of Xian. It was a nightmare!

No problem on the tangent. I am very interested in learning about the scrap business. I have a chance to buy up lots of scrap sheet copper used by roofing & sheetmetal companies. The sheetmetal shops will sell it to me for the same as they get from a scrap yard. My idea is to sit on it for a year or two and see if the price climbs. I tried to do this in 2008, but didn't have the room to store it.

Man, I feel your pain. It's not just the Chinese who will do that. It is just about every commercial realty management company I have ever dealt with!

IF you could have bought scrap copper at the bottom in 2008 and held it until the top.... that would have been a nice return on investment! I think I see a shortage trend.

That September is when I realized that all the BIG companies and the government will always make money... whether the markets are going up or down, its us little folks who pay the price. I lost faith in the "dream" of putting your time in and eventually you will have something.
