Question about 2009-2010-2011-2012 mint & proof cents

Postby uthminsta » Thu Oct 04, 2012 5:54 pm

I read back in 2009 that the cents included in the US Mint's proof sets were made of copper. At least I think that's the story. So I have 3 questions:
1. Was it the proofs only or were they copper in the mint sets too?
2. Have they continued that in the 2010, 2011, 2012 numismatic sets?
3. Has ANYONE EVER FOUND ONE of these 21st-century coppers in their sorting? That would be a curious addition to the copper pile. In fact, I think

The only mention I have seen of anyone finding one of these is PENNYGUY, back in November 2011, on page 7 of the proof tracking thread:

Anyone have a 2009 mint set?
Anyone have a 2010, 2011, 2012 proof set?
Can you see what the insert card says the composition is?

I think only the '09 Ag proof set and the Ag Lincoln commemorative dollar + 4 reverses set contained the Cu cents.
I'm pretty sure the clad mints and proofs had zinkers in the sets.

I have found one 2010 S cent in all my penny fun time and it's Zn.

Someone nail this down. All 2009 proof cents are COPPER, right?
And all the 2010-2011-2012 proof cents are ZINC?
And the 2009 mint set coins, are they zinc?

Mint set copper see http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=15003&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=10211

(4) Lincoln Bicentennial One Cent Coins* (recognizing the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln’s birth);

*Lincoln one-cent coins contain an alloy consisting of 95% copper, 3% zinc and 2% tin that matches the alloy used in the original 1909 version.

If all 2009 mint set AND proof set cents are copper, and all 2010-2011-2012 MINT set cents are zinc, that leads me to believe that their proof counterparts are also zinc. Makes sense that it was a one-year change. Anyone besides pennyguy found one of those yet?

2009 Mint and proofs cents are 95% copper, this was a one yr issue. 2010 and beyond mint and proof cents are the standard composition.

Just a suggestion. maybe put a few of the mint set copper pennies back. They are still very cheap IMO.

Having come to this conclusion, I would LOVE to find a 2009 proof cent in my sorting...

Satin cents are what you want. Approximately 785k were made compared to 2mil proofs.

That would be terrific. I just want the distinction of actually finding a copper proof falling out the copper side of my Ryedale. What makes me keep thinking about it, is once in a while one of those zincs, with a design from 2009 or a shield, "misfires" and falls in with the copper. They always stand out so much. And I think it would be neat if I turned it over and saw the 2009 S date/mm. Then I would have some of the NEWEST copper from the mint.

Was the 785k the combined total of Denver and Philly? Also where did you find your info? I tried looking for mintage totals and couldn't find them. Thanks.

That is the number of mint sets made, so there are 785k(approximately) of each type. I found the info on other coin forums.
