2012 Metal Detecting Thread

well, I went back after dinner for another 2 hours but didn't have any luck finding silver this time.

I found:
1 quarter
3 dimes
12 copper cents
$0.67 total

Plus another 11 wheaties to add to my jar.

Surprised the heck out of me as all I was finding was old tin cans in the woods.

Awesome find Thunter!!!! I've never found a seated coin.

I went back to my usual spot this evening but didn't have much luck. I only found 4 copper cents and 6 wheaties before it got too dark to see what I was doing.

I went out and hit a park and a school yard yesterday to do some clad hunting.
I found a bunch of clad, a few pieces of junk jewelry & a silver Claddagh ring

30 Quarters
18 dimes
12 nickels (yes, I was hoping for a gold ring!)
11 copper cents
$10.01 total

I haven't been out in so long. First I was having hell with my back and now it is rainy season where I live so guys keep digging and at least I can drool over your finds.

I'm not a metal detector guy, so I don't know. But from the occasional comment on this thread, I am led to ask: Do certain settings on your machine only react to specific metals or metal groups?

Yepper....gold gives out lower numbers and tones. Iron and steel give out the lowest tones. Silver sings loud and clear with high numbers and tones.

Machines differ on their tones and numbers but hunting mid-low tones will result in gold....eventually. A supply of pull-tabs, aluminum foil, and small pieces of aluminum shreded cans(can slaw) will also be found in LARGE numbers!.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. It depends on where I'm hunting and how much time I have.

My last 2 hour hunt with 2 other hunters....added some clad and a couple mysterious finds.




These rang up high like silver. Were 6 to 7 inches deep and a good 6 foot from each other! The one on the left is smooth with those little marks on it's top. Like someone smashed it down. The bottom is smooth. I didn't try the acid yet.

I'm at 1513 coins total. Got 7 silver coins but really had to work for them! You've found a heck of a lot of coins ..

Detected in local reservoir last Friday. Water level is brought way down in the fall so I can detect where people used to swim, boat etc. on dry land where it was completely submerged just a few months ago.

Best find was probably a flashlight.

However... it's not a flashlight but a “tactical torch” … Ha! Unique find and it still works!

Jewelry finds were two silver toe rings and a carved turtle wrapped with some silver wire and turquoise. No gold rings. Still plenty of area to search though.

Local dive shop will pay 50 cents a pound for lead. They recast into dive weights. Much better price compared to scrapyard. When I get 100 lbs or so I'll get rid of it and start fresh.

Did a morning hunt with a different forum member OBrother this morning. We hit a park in an old section of town. My thoughts are they did something before the park was created!

Anyway, my third target of the day was a huge rifle catridge. At first I thought it was jewelry. I've found 3 of these that were hollowed out and put on a necklace.



This park gave us some clad, copper, and zinc. OBrother got his first.....yeah...piece of jewelry!!!! Might not be bling but still a first. I nailed a spoon and some other junk!!!:mad:



Best part of the morning was when we switched sides to hunt. I got an iffy signal at 6-8 inches. I was thinking indian head cent.....I got either a pocket spill.....huge pocket.....or either some kid decided to bury his pennies or another detectionist was playing a game. Either way there were over 75-80 pennies in that one hole!!!! Included were 17 zinc ones that ain't round anymore!



So, we head over to another park in search of.....treasure!!!! We find more change and call it a day. I stayed after another 20 minutes and found lots of dug doo-doo!!! Had to clean the shoes before I could get in my truck.

Total for the day......(cracked $200 on the year)

111 pennies (round ones).........had 17 partial ones from the hole!

What do you guys do with all that change? Do you clean it up? Send it back to the government? Roll it as is? Some of it seems in such bad condition.

Tumble it up! Good as new...kinda. Copper....nobody keeps copper pennies. Mine(clad and zinc) gets dumped with the regular pennies.

All banks in these parts do not take rolls,,,,too many wise-asses! I tumble 'em enough to make it through the coin machine.
