I would like to see a chemical analysis of a French franc. Maybe I'll see if I can a local lab to try a XRF analysis as an experiment/calibration of their equipment.

So today we tried something new. We brought a large magnet to the coin shop and went fishing for nickel in the foreign coins as we can buy at 6 cents each. After five minutes heres what we got. It went quick just had to look a the nickel looking coins that the magnet got.

Found one of these. Not are photo--

Is there a type of magnet that will attract nickel but not steel?

Nope, stuff is either magnetic or not. The magnet is just a first stage sort so you don't
have to manually weed out Cu/Ni, Aluminum and other non-magnetic stuff one coin at
a time. You still have to know what's Nickel and what's not for the 2nd stage of the sort,
though you now have less overall volume to go through than if you didn't use the magnet
to pre-sort.

These do not attract Ni better than steel, if it is a magnetic attracted material, it will be attracted. But the pair of these work GREAT at pulling out the magnetic ones, and can attract quite a bit before you clean them off and look for more. I put these 2 together, the flat disc being the 'pull' magnet, and the thin rod is stuck to the flat disc, and used like a handle.

http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D4E

kjmagnetics has a LOT of good magnets, and the prices are not bad at all. I have bought from them several times in the past. Always a good vendor.

This small magnet is one of my favorites. It works GREAT to self test silver (999, 90%, sterling or even 80%). http://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=D71-N52 That one is an N52 variety, which is the strongest of all Neodymium currently available. There are vids out there, showing how to use a magnet like this to test for silver (I think it works for gold also). It simply slides very slowly down high silver content flat-ish surfaces (like a coin or bar).

So ... The first pure nickel coin minted was the 1881 20 rappen (Switzerland) and the last was the 2007 1 lira (Malta)? Any regular circulation coins currently minted in pure nickel?

Probably no coincidence that the last minting of pure nickel coins stopped during the year when nickel reached its peak prices of $23+/pound in April 2007

First I need to belatedly thank Cerulean for his/her very detailed post over 3 1/2 years ago.

But I wanted to take things in a slightly different direction. I wanted to make a list of only coins which are pure nickel and could be found in foreign coin bins without too much difficulty. So I've eliminated plated and bi-metallic issues. Also, I've eliminated coins from countries where it is hard to know the origin without matching photos (i.e., India, Japan, etc.). Also not included are Canadian 10c, 25c, 50c, and $1 coins- even though many of them are made of nickel, they aren't close to being worth saving like the pre-'82 nickels are. Also, I've eliminated those that were only made for a single year or were made before 1960. Two exceptions to the pre-60 rule are Canadian nickels and also issues from other countries which began before 1960 but were made after 1960 as well.

My purpose in doing this is so that the user can have a short list to take with them when going through buckets of foreign coins, rather than having to lug around a big thick Krause catalog. I've also included the weights in grams for each coin. Please let me know about any errors or omissions. This should be considered a work in progress and should not be considered to be a perfect list. Here goes:

CONDENSED FOREIGN COIN LIST:

ANGOLA- 20 escudos 1971-72 (12.06g)

NETH. ANTILLES- 10 cents 1970-85 (2g); 25 cents 1970-85 (3 1/2g); 1 gulden 1970-85 (9g) (some 70's had silver); 2.5 gulden 1978-85 (14g)

One correction, France 5 francs 1970-2001 is Nickel-clad-CuNi

Numismaster online has this incorrectly listed as Nickel.
(I've reported the error months ago, but they seem pretty slow on updating reported errors).

the older Krause catalogs have it correct. In hand you can tell the difference as this coin is only lightly magnetic compared to pure nickel.

Otherwise superb list!

Can someone please tell me exactly how much nickel is in the French 5 Franc made from 1970 on. All the books say: "nickel clad-copper nickel".

Thanks!

I found a site: http://www.pubachat.com/5-francs-semeuse-nickel-1970-2001.php look at the bottom of the page.

It claims that it is the standard 25% copper, 75% nickel.
