I know, I know... I will try to get to that tomorrow. I only have a few minutes at the desktop tonight. It's in the kids' bedroom while we are at the inlaws on vacation.

Real time report. I'm sitting in the bank waiting. Maybe the first time I've ever had to do this. A lady with bags and bags of change is dumping her stuff. I'm hopeful!

I know, I know, I need to update this. Maybe tonight.

But I had one of those "holy crud" thoughts the other day about the future of this "machine clearing" or "magnet cleaning" you guys are doing. Hear me out.

There are talks about changing or eliminating the cent and/or nickel. One of those proposed possibilities is to make the nickel out of steel, which is of course magnetic. Are you following where this line of thinking is going? :?

If that is the case, then every coin counter in the united states would have to remove their magnets. RIGHT? The immediate change would be no more free magnetic Canadian bounty for you all, right?

But it would also mean, with the new "lower standards" on all the coin counters, some people would figure out what further junk stuff they could mix in to get counted...

Thoughts?

I'm sure we've all thought of that; certainly I have.

Some (most?) of the magnetic coin will get rejected by other means - come out the reject slot rather than stick to the magnet. The others that pass the balance of checks will just get counted.

The US may have difficulty going to a magnetic coin just because so many machines here have a magnet included in the rejection scheme. That's why I'm not sure that the nickel might not be a completely different alloy than so much of the rest of the world has moved to, maybe nickel plated zinc or a zinc/aluminum alloy. The cent is a losing proposition anyway so they just choose to loose money on it for the duration that they keep it.

From a past thread--
As you may know my son Franklin get all kinds of free coins off the magnet on coin counters and I told him that the US was going to steel coins. He then said asked about the coin counters and what would happen as that most counters will not take steel coins. I have been told at the banks and CU when they send the bags of coins to the Feds they are short paid if the have tokens in the bag. So I emailed Coinstar and Cummins to ask what there plans are for the change and if all there counter can be reworked . Also I have been ask at the banks and the CU they had any thoughts and they said coin counting is not a money maker and if it cost to much to change out the counters they may go away. I will post back if I get a email back from the counter co. Also how does the counter work in Canada as that there must not be a magnet?

And
I got a call back from Cummins today and the sales rep. said that taking the magnets of of some of there lower cost counters could be a problem. As the lower cost counters do not use a discriminator and go by size and weight. So im a still thinking if the new coins are steel some bank might dump there coin counting.
