Update Pick a box. Clad IKES

Postby henrysmedford » Sun Dec 09, 2012 1:35 pm

We are on a family trip to the Oregon coast. On the way over I dropped my wife off to visit her 88 year old dad over night to spend some time with him. When we pick her up she had this box that she had me load up and told me she would tell me about it later. When we got the kids in bed she said her dad had three boxes and said he had split up his coins into to three boxes one for her, one for her sister and one for her brother . She was not sure on the one to pick so she had her niece pick it for her. The box is 12x9.5 x6 and my wife want to wait until we are home to see what is in it. I am trying to sell her on the idea of looking at it tonight. My wife was not in to coins as kid and has no idea what is in it it could just be change it could be much more. This is like an early Christmas.

Way to go. Christmas would come early if that was my package. There's no way I would be able to wait to open it. If neither your brother in law or sister in law are into coins I would tell them that you want first shot at anything they want to get rid of. Before they take it to the bank and dump it at face value.

That story...that picture...this has got to be one of the cruelest threads ever started on realcent. Open the box!!! You know you want to...Please, I beg of you. Open the dang box.

I've been reading a lot of information here as of late about an alarming increase of Gremlins in the state of Oregon. Seems they have been running night manuvers and opening countless boxes deemed for Christmas morning. It sure would be a shame to see pictures of the contents of your wifes package here on RC prior to Christmas due to an untimely raid by said creatures...I'm just saying ;)

I have a similar MYSTERY BOX story.

My grandpa has been a coin collector since the 50's. He actually had my mom and her sisters help him go through $50 penny bags way back then. "Back when they ALL weighed 34 pounds," he told me once. You would find an Indian in every few rolls, he says. Imagine being able to put together a roll of Indians with a single bank bag. Anyway, he always said they were looking and looking and looking - for years and years - for the elusive 1955 doubled die.

I told you that in order to set in your mind that he really does know what he's doing. He's owned quite a bit of gold, silver, and beautiful coins over the decades. Bought and sold many thousands of numismatic gems. He has a pretty nice brilliant uncirculated Mexican collection, with each year in a neat display case, a collection I've looked at more than once.

Okay. So a couple years ago, mom comes home from visiting him and Granny, and she has a box. About the size of a medium flat rate. She showed it to me in her closet. She told me she was instructed not to open it until he died.

...and she still hasn't.

So because you have to go thru the agony of waiting you decided it would be fun to make us all share it with you. That's cruel.

Any 40% in there?

It's fun to search for Ike varieties like the 1971D Friendly Eagle, the 1972 Type 2, and the various peg legs and talon heads. The Ike Group has information about varieties and how to identify them. I've still yet to find a 1972 Type 2.

The other boxes had gold, frankincense and myrrh. Tell her next time to pick the heaviest box and avoid the smelliest one.

I was thinking the same thing. With my luck my sister would have gotten the box with the gold in it, my brother would have gotten the box with the silver in it and I have would have gotten the box with the clad Kennedy's and zinc pennies in it.
