Slow way to acquire Nickels

Postby SilverDragon72 » Wed Nov 28, 2012 8:17 pm

Well, I haven't been able to pick up many boxes of coins as of late, so in order to keep adding to my stash little by little....I've started asking for nickels back everytime I get change for a purchase. I know, it takes quite a while to get many of them, but over time they will add up.

A bonus! I received a War Nickel in my change today. That kinda made my day  One from 1944 "S"
I haven't seen any 2009's lately....

Even if the bank won't give you whole boxes or bags, they might give you a few rolls at a time.

Oh yeah, I know they will. It's just that I haven't had any significant amount of money to buy them in bulk. It should pick up again soon. Just had to pay some pesky bills first :(

So, is that basically just for fun? CAuse it would be a lot easier to just ask for nickels. Having money to set aside doesn't really have anything to do with it, since you can stack the same amount wether they're from change or from bankrolls.

I actually don't even save the ones I get as change. I put them in the bag with my other change. I've been saving it for 4 and a half years and want to see how much I have once the bag gets full and I take it to the bank. I do pull out copper pennies, though. The don't affect the total as much and I just can't bring myself to let them go.

It can definitely be tough getting boxes of nickels. Most of the banks I go to have an informal limit of one box per week, but if they are heavy (which is becoming rarer) they will do one right away. They will usually give out two bundles without too much haggling however.

Yes, I've absolutely been flatout denied before - at a bank that I've been with for over 20 years, I mean seriously though - they can't sell you what they may not have in the back vault (the warning to paper gold and silver). I can only imagine what the banks would do in the US if nickels should start heading up to 8 cents again. I can imagine they would start to place limits and maybe even per roll "transportation" charges, there are quite a few excuses out there to limit your nickels.

If you want to panic, a nice controlled panic :shh: is much better for everyone.

As always, slow and steady - and don't make any sudden movements (don't try to order three tonnes of nickels, unless you talk to Adam Young)

When there is less strain on my available capital for investment in our hobby....my CU lets me order as much as I can....as long as I give them sufficient notice. They are pretty cool about it!

Meanwhile, I still get some nickels everyday, each time I get change back...I always trade a quarter or two for nickels. I will be getting more in the near future!

I recently found a 1937 Buffalo nickel among my nickel rolls that I acquired the other day. It's in very good condition, not much wear and tear (from what I can tell anyway). Finding a gem like that makes it fun

I try to provide them with a couple of boxes every week so they don't run out. Of course you probably wouldn't want those rolls once I have picked them over.
