Couple of Questions (New Stacker)

This forum is for discussing hunting and collecting US and Canadian circulation Silver Bullion Coins, other types of minted bullion, and other types of precious and base metal investments other than Bullion Pennies and Nickels.

Couple of Questions (New Stacker)

Postby 93_Confirmed » Mon Dec 24, 2012 3:38 pm

I'm new to the forum and was hoping for some guidance on a couple of issues:

1) My LCS has Morgans/Peace Dollars at $27 each. A few have late 1800-early 1900 dates and are in pretty good condition - circulated, visible dates, reasonable wear. Are these well-priced and would you recommend them for a new stacker with no 90% inventory?

2) Another LCS has a pretty vast selection of 1oz silver bullion (mostly generic) but they're at Spot +$3. If I were to order online, I'd be using a CC (we pay it off every month) and would have to deal with shipping fees. Are there any sites worth ordering from where their prices offset their CC/shipping fees or am I better off just buying local at that premium.

3) What is a reasonable premium to pay for BU American Silver Eagles and for Silver Maple Leafs? Do sellers generally recoup those premiums?

Thanks in advance,
93

Look around in the Buy It Now section. There are some good deals there.

Welcome to RC. Take a look around. You might be able to find what you are looking for cheaper here than anywhere else.

$27 is fair on Silver Dollars- not amazing but not bad

$3 over for generic is bad- $1 over is much better and lots of coin shops sell at this rate

CC fees are unavoidable- they all dealers have to pay fees themselves to accept credit cards
So I would seek a different payment method or use a Credit card w/ cashback or 0% APR to offset costs

Eagles and maples for $3/ over is the current going rate for these near me

a great answer to question #2 is silvertowne. their price is for any kind of payment, even CC, and their own bullion usually ships for free!

I'd second Silvertowne right now:

Recouping premiums depend upon venue you sell through. If you do it peer-to-peer here, the general selling range is not much above spot as far as I have seen. You'll get above spot on Ebay but lose it with the fees though IMHO. Going premiums on eagles and maple leaf coins are ~ $3 to $4 each.

Recognized, name-brand generic bullion can hold its own along with silver eagles and maple leafs I have seen. Peruse sites like Scottsdale, Provident, Gainesville coins, Silvertowne, Apmex, Westminster, etc. to get familiar with the popular brands of generic silver. I think that Johnson Matthey and Engelhard are the widely recognized generic silver brands but you can see on Ebay what prices are for generic and see the most money goes for about a dozen varieties of generic, one of them being the Indian head/Buffalo style silver round.

Welcome, there are many PhD's in stacking here that can give you some sound advice. I'm somewhat of a newbie myself and always enjoy the professors here and at Bullion Stackers. I will tell you that between both of these forums, the real truth on the market price for PM's is very transparent. The folks here are not only honest, but have something kind of odd in that they base their transactions on the common denominator called integrity. Read, search, and read again, all your answers are at your fingertips!

Cheers...and Merry Christmas!!

Welcome the answers above are fair an true
I find the prices here are very tempting an if you allow for gas to an from the coin shop the small flat rate box at $6.10 is the same. No you can't pick an choose but your price here is about as good as you get for less than $500 at LCS.
FWITSW the premium on Morgans an Peace are not worth it to Me, I go for rolls of 90 % an enjoy fondling all but BU coins. 8-)

Welcome to Realcent.
IMHO-
Question 1 - Morgans/Peace dollars at $27 is a good purchase both for the silver and the numismatic reasons.

Question 2 - My tried and true "Provident Metals". I have used them exclusively, they have good prices and the shipping charges won't nick you in your bottom line. Give them a try.

Question 3 - I have heard members here getting ASE for as little as $1.50 to $3 over spot. I would buy em all day at those premiums. You will most certainly recoup those premiums if not more when it comes time to liquidate. Keep your eye on condition. Condition is key.

And as always this is my 2 cents worth.

I'd say the the Morgans (and Liberties) at this particular LCS are somewhere between Fine and Very Fine, which is surprising being that they've been circulating and are so old. If they're still around when I got tomorrow I might grab 3 or 4 of them.

I shopped around quite a bit and for me it came down to either SilverTowne or Provident. SilverTowne makes a lot of sense with 1oz bars at 32.70 and no CC or shipping charges but I already have a few and felt like I wanted to diversify (I realize that has no real monetary purpose :) ). I ended it up going with Provident. There were CC and shipping fees but the lower prices of the 1oz bars (Golden State, Sunshine, OPM, etc.) offset those for those most part. I also splurged a little and threw in a Englehard Prospector Round (1 oz) and 2013 Maple Leaf. All in all the total order was about $10 more than SilverTowne.

I hit my LCS this morning and grabbed a Morgan (1883) and Peace (1924) - both were $26. It's so nice to not only add some 90% to the stack but also to have a piece of history.

Also, I found my first silver through coin rolling and just wanted to say how good it feels. I've been searching casually for a few weeks now and just found a '62 Roosevelt Dime and '68 Kennedy. Is there a dedicated coin rolling thread in the forum or do you guys just talk about it in random threads?

There is a whole Tracking Section where many people report their finds.

I stopped by a LCS near work today and was pleasantly surprised. The salesperson was incredibly friendly and willing to help out and answer questions while I cherry picked. They had 90% junk for spot (21.5x) and it many were in good condition. Picked up 2 Kennedy's and 2 Franklins. They had generic bullion for spot + $3 and some of the rounds were actually mildly beat up ASEs (acid spots, minor gashes, etc. Didn't seem worth it for ASEs since they were going $35 for brand new.

I was hoping to grab some Morgan's or Peace dollars but they were...$35/ea. He couldn't really explain why there were so high but thinks maybe the owner is partial to them and wants to limit sales. So, all in all I now have another LCS where I can go and fumble around as I learn the silver ropes.

That's the way my LCS is too, Morgans and Peace dollars are priced in the mid 30's area. You guys that are buying Morgans and Peace dollars in the mid 20's are really making me jealous. I would be buying several rolls at that price.
