communications after s.h.t.f.

sorry if this has been discussed before. i usually stick to the bullion forums.
what kinds of communications, if any, will be possible after it hits the fan? i know power supply would be a major factor. CB a possibilty?
are we limited to carrier pigeons and shouting?

I have a set of 3 small motorala radios
I think they have a 25 mile range.
I am thinking about a faraday cage for them.
anyone know if a 55 gallon drum with a metal lid will work for this?
I'll bet I have to start a new thread for that question.
I ahve a few other things that i'd like to protect also.

A metal drum should do the trick. If you want to get carried away, you could do a metal peanut tin inside a 30 gallon drum inside a 55 gallon drum in the middle of a foil covered room.

Marine band and ham radios would be effective communication if the grid went down...but you're supposed to be licensed to use either of those.

Faraday cages do not need to be grounded.

Best cage: The surface should be as regular as possible and the sides as close to the same size as possible. A sphere is best.

Do not allow anything conductive to touch the inner surface, it will allow bleed through.

Thicker metal is more resistant to higher frequencies and higher power levels. I don't know any figures.

You can make your own out of aluminum screen or siding, just be sure to staple from the inside out so the staples and nails do not conduct signals. Cannot guess how effective that would be.
