Two barber halves in the same roll

I stopped by a few banks on the way home from work today looking for customer rolls of halves. The first few banks a total of three rolls and a bunch of loose halves. Nothing too exciting but at least they had some halves available. The last bank I stopped at was the good one. They had two customer wrapped rolls and 19 loose halves. The teller counted out the loose ones and I spotted the silver coin in there right away. When I opened the first of the two rolls this evening I found three silver (1 - 90%, 2 - 40%). The second roll was even better. It has a total of nine silver coins including two Barber halves (4 - 90%, 5 - 40%). Not a bad haul for only $105 searched.

The Barber halves both have 'S' mint marks. I wonder if they have spent over 100 years circulating around California waiting to be discovered.

Cash holds me back as well. Just how much cash would I need to start searching for halves. Does anybody have any thought on that. Just wondering.

It doesn't take much cash. Any time you're at a bank just ask if they have halves. Often they don't have any, but if they do, it's usually less than $20-30. And if they have tonnes more than that, it's probably someone's dump so you don't want it anyway.

If you want to get into it more heavily, you'll need at least $500. Many banks will order halves for you by the box but they come in $500 boxes so you need at least that much, sometimes more. My bank only orders a minimum of 2 boxes at a time so I need $1000.

Way to go! I've done halves for a little more than a year and have never found a Barber. Nice finds!

Congrats on a really cool find. I'm always a little puzzled by how old coins like barbers mercury or buffalos remain in circulation, or end up in bank or customer rolls. Thankful but puzzled.

My quest to search for silver halves in 2013 started with $1500. That's more than necessary to be successful. You need to be persistent and always ask for halves. You may just get a few loose coins. You may also find the occasional bank that has two or three rolls that someone brought in. That's where you tend to score silver. Keep maybe $60 or $80 on you when you are asking around at different banks and that should be enough to get you started. Don't be afraid to stop at banks you don't bank with. Most tellers just want to get rid of the coins and don't care if you are a customer or not.
