My Buddy hit a small Jackpot!

Postby HD-Daddy » Tue Jan 29, 2013 11:00 pm

So I have a real good friend who bought a nice little rental near his home. I stopped by one day as he was cleaning it. I told him to check all nooks and cranies, as I knew that an older gentleman lived there many years. Sure enough he found about $2000.00 in junk silver. How Sweet is that! I was so excited for him. The stash included Indian heads(20-30) and $10 -$14 of pennies I haven't gone through yet and Buffalo nicks also.

I'd say that was quite a respectable jackpot.
If you are waiting for the "correction" to buy you need to realize that the increasing prices ARE the correction.

Who deserves the found coins more? The man who found them or the family of the man who once lived there? I know my answer.

Family is not always "friendly" you know.

If the old man had family that cared about him his family would already have the money.

The old man made his decision. Most likely based on the neglect of his "family".

Your decision shouldn't override his decision which he definitely consciously made.

Who is to say that the coins were even the old mans? Is he the only person to ever live in that residence?

Not really sure, in theory it could have been previous familys' stash. The buddy said as a kid he use to deliver newspapers to different owners.

Ha!

Ethics and Morals eh?

Always funny to try and evaluate situations...Just wrote a couple paragraphs here of analysis to illustrate the futility...but ended up deleting them

Just take joy from life while you can and avoid all that impairs your ability to do so--ethics and morals included (possibly rational thought as well, but thats another debate)

Nice find man!!

Very nice jackpot!

I was remodeling a room and a silver dime fell out of the ceiling. Not quite an epic jackpot, but I was happy. :)

There is much joy in living with morality.

In this case though the facts are clear -> the person that hid the coins did not do so for his family that probably neglected him. Either the old man or 2 old men ago.

Family is not a right to all that the person has, each person makes that decision themselves.

The loot was found in a corner cabinet (dead stop)in kitchen. And this post was me expressing joy for someone else, not to debate who is entitled to it. I believe the house was bought as is. So I'm thinking if the plumbing or electrical needed work, my friend would be on the hook.

Did he find $2000.00 face value silver or did he find silver that was worth $2000.00?

Yeah he wishes it was face value. He wasn't sure of value till I showed him. We are going to go through it when we are both off. There was no flips or carded stuff just rolls of quarters, dimes, war nicks, halves, and few Morgan's. Several rolls of older copper cents we haven't gone through.and a few rolls of older Nickles.

Very interesting, nice score. When you go through it I'd be interested to know what the newest coin in the hoard is.
267,500 pennies and 186,000 nickels searched. Hand sorter.

I once moved into a rental and found a large cent from 1796. It had been cleaned at one time long ago, but it still went for enough on the Bay to make rent for a month.

I always try to take the high road. If you bought a property, then the property and all the contents are legally yours. I would have no problem keeping the money.

I would hold on to the money for a period of time before spending it, just in case there is some sort of claim on it.

Wow! Sweet find!!! You deserve a big hand for helping your friend!

On the ethics issue, I had to come to grips on that same thing years ago. Here is how I settled it for myself: If it's in your pocket, your wallet/purse, or your property/house~~ it's yours. If it's laying on the ground, (or in a vacated house in your case), it's mine.

Don't agree with me? Well, then don't leave your money laying on the ground around me!
When I die, I want to go like Grandpa did. He died in his sleep..... Not screaming and hollering like all the passengers in his car.

thats a neat story....i got one, a weird one. in the mid 90's, my son's mother ( i loathe writing "ex-wife", makes me feel low) and i, with our 18 month old son moved into a rental house, in a well known hippy canyon in SoCal, that SHE found. i wasnt wild about the place, but just learning the wisdom of "yes dear".

there was a fellow, who had a small rental house behind us. My son would be put to nap in a small bedroom, and would frequently awaken just shrieking, which was unlike him. He would say that "the red man was in the room"....oh yeh, very creepy, stay with me.

so time goes by, and the guy in the back, Hank and i made friends, he loathed the landlord, and told me everything she DID NOT. Told me that a major coke dealer, had been living and dealing in this house for about two years, and one night blew his brains out in the living room, and Hank also told me, rumor had it, somewhere in this place, he had stashed a quarter of million dollars in frns.

God only knows if this poor soul, was the "red man" that my the toddler saw. But i remember there was a time period where my business went south for a spell, and i searched this house high and low. It was a creepy wooden house, with a half attic and a million stash places, i looked and looked, found nothing.

Stupid story, but i fully expected to find $250,000 dollars, but no. It seemed that everything went south for me and my boys mother, while we were in that house. My career went south for a long spell, our marriage went south,i wont go into details, but i had to move out, i found a place a mile away. You could say, "dont blame it on the house".....but there was something there, that was bad.

The landlord could of got in real trouble, not revealing this to us; a grisly suicide. I know California is a goofed up nanny state, but under law a landlord is REQUIRED to reveal, something of that nature. After i moved out, my ex-wife, she's a dear woman...truly, she continued to spiral out of control, and only righted her course, when she took an apartment in the Valley...and 16 years later, we are still close kin, i still am very much in love with her.

But it all begs the question, what if i DID find this rumored $250,000 that a dead coke dealer had purportedly stashed? Think about it. Can you imagine the curse that would follow me? Haunt me? Not guilt, but worse...ill fortune, in spades. i know some of you might be rolling your eyes, but i'm really glad i didnt find that money, and that the three of lived thru that all, dwelling in a very bad place.

Nothing is free in life.
