ELITE FINDS of 2010

Postby uthminsta » Tue Dec 28, 2010 8:45 pm

Many of us know that Country puts a LOT of time and effort into the monthly tracking threads. And a LOT of us provide input into those threads. That's what makes all the coordination so useful - the fact that it represents a wide spectrum of finds from a wide spectrum of people, sorting a whole LOT of coins (about 2 and a quarter MILLION dollars sorted and reported).

So a few weeks back I was thinking, I wonder what sort of finds would stand out as the most elite? After some research into all the previous threads, considering how many of a certain type were found in relation to others, and watching this latest month's thread as it went along, I present to you what I call the "ELITE FINDS." Feel free to add your own if you consider it a "holy cow" find, or a "once in a lifetime" find... Dates of the finds are included so that you can look it up in the original thread and read about it. Hope you like it!

(INDIANS and LINCOLNS were not included in this, although there were undoubtedly some pretty elite finds among those types Indians are tracked here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=136 and Lincolns are tracked here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=263 ). So let's get on with what I did coordinate:

I just checked the Indian cent tracking thread and it looks like there were around 275 of those reported found this year. Compare that, which we consider a rather rare find (I've heard the estimate of one about every $10,000), to the numbers of the coins listed above...

That's an interesting and impressive list.

Thanks for the work Uthminsta.
If you are waiting for the "correction" to buy you need to realize that the increasing prices ARE the correction.

Of course it counts... you found cool coins! But I would say it doesn't exactly qualify for this thread since it wasn't found while roll searching and/or at face value. That's kind of the way Country's threads go, so I'll stick with that.

Nice summary for the year. I will say finding not only 1 but 3 Stone Mountain commerative halves was the highlight of my year. And seeing Bamajoe in a state away find 2 more in the same general time was amazing.

Hey man I'm glad you joined this forum. Your blog is the coolest! If I remember correctly I found it even before realcent.

This is a great idea uthminsta- maybe after awhile we could vote on find of the year...

Here's my 2011 contribution of 2 BARBER HALVES (1915-D and 1901) found in the same $500 box of halves on 1/6/11:

I found a couple of V nickels a couple of years ago and one of them was on the end of a roll. I believe I shared a picture on the nickel tracking thread when it was found. I am sure there are many more finds we all had along the way. Thanks for sharing this "old" thread.

I wasn't yet an RC member when this thread was created, but it is a GREAT idea for a thread.

I dug back into the record books to see if I could find anything to add. On May 7, 2010 (before I joined this site) I found a 1970-D half (very tough date to find, since it was NIFC and 40% silver and very low mintage to boot). It was in $24 of halves received from one of the big name banks.

I know the other stuff was older, but I figured that the 70-D is actually worth more than some of the other coins found so I thought I'd include it in this thread.

Also I checked other years but couldn't find anything of note as yet.

1970-D is tough to find. I thought I would never find one so I bought one from a pawn shop to fill the hole in my book. I eventually did find one in a bag on 9-22-2015.
I am not a super sorter but have searched 49 bags and 18 boxes over the years, plus the loose halfs and misc small amount of rolls that I come across. In all of those just the one 1970-D.

Here are the finds that I have had that might qualify for this thread.

12-28-10 1893 Columbian half.
09-22-15 1970-D Kenney half.
09-29-16 1835 half dime. (found in a bag of half dollars)
