Advice on buying rolls of G-4 Liberty Nickels

Postby rainsonme » Fri Dec 31, 2010 2:07 am

I have an opportunity to buy $2 rolls of G4 Liberty nickels for $5 each. I bought all they had, 9 rolls, but they will have more. All but 2 nickels were clear full dates. A few had some or all of the "liberty" lettering on the head. This seems like too good of a deal ---- so, I ask the experts here, is this a good deal? Should I continue to buy more?

(as an aside, there were 3 1883's with full "Liberty" and one G4 1912-S ----- out of 9 rolls, 360 nickles, so I do not count on any other such bonuses. There were also 5 or 6 probably plainly sub-G4, even to my untrained eye)

If it makes you feel any better, I'll pay $6/roll and I'll throw in shipping.

I would say it's not a great deal per se if you were to sell to a dealer. But they seem to command high prices on eBay ($40-$50)

I'd buy them all day long at $5 a roll. Do you plan on selling any of them?

Well, i really don't have any plans for anything. I like coins, and I have been hoarding silver and to a lesser extend copper pennies for 4 years now. No plan ---- that is a small problem.

About 3 years ago I was explaining to my daughter, then 13, that every half dollar I pulled from a bag was (at that time) a $4 profit. She said, no. It is a 50-cent loss, because you will never sell any of those. To date, she is correct.

Let me see how many more I can obtain.
