Cleaning out boxes of US 5 cents.

Took 5 boxes to find my first war nickel - a worn 43 S.
Same box produced a really decent 37 Buffalo. First one I've seen in the wild myself in years.

(Have about 10 more bank boxes to work through.)

Making room are we?

It takes me around two hours per canadian box to pull out the .999. Is it around the same on the US ones?

I guess. :) The boxes of nickels were one of the first steps I took early in the preparations process, when I didn't have stockpiles of anything of significance. I have since bought a fair amount of .999 nickel (Canadian and French) and what with the other stockpiles built up over the past couple of years (cents and PM) decided that most of the nickels could stand to go (but not before being searched). I'll keep a couple of sorted boxes on hand, even so.

I hope I'm not missing too much but I can do a box in about an hour. I'm not getting all the old dates, but I think I'm getting the war nickels, the buffalos, the foreign coin (I get a couple of .999 canadians in most boxes), and as many of the pre-1961 coins as I can easily spot without turning over every coin. It's probably easier to do these than what you're doing, though if I had your target I'd probaby be trying to use a Ryedale for an automated nickel sort.

True, but I could not ''afford'' the speed of a Ryedale

On a side note, I think my percentage are improving because everybody is getting rid of their pennies and emptying their spare change jars, so older nickel is re-circulating.

Based on the first 4 boxes searched I never would have touched another nickel box, had I not already stored a bunch of boxes. But then on the fifth box (as noted above), some goodies.

Did 3 more boxes this morning and the averages are picking up. A total of 5 war nickels from the 3 boxes, plus a dateless buffalo and another 37.

So from 8 boxes: 6 war nickels and 3 buffalos. (Plus assorted 39s-thru-60s.) This might just cause me to switch to nickel searching. I'm tired of cent sorting for now, and the dime, quarter, and half sorting has produced nothing but heartache for me. At least this is producing some results as well as some gratification!

8 more boxes left to search, from the old hoard. Depending on what they yield I may start ordering some more nickel boxes.

[Edit - I had lost track of a box.] Did 3 more boxes. From first two, 5 more war nickels and another dateless buffalo and... a 1902 V nickel! Third box was a skunk for anything very interesting. So of 11 boxes so far 5 skunks, but from the other 6 boxes a total of 11 war nickels, 4 buffaloes, and a V nickel. Seems it is either feast or famine, but there is enough in the boxes to keep me interested.

I don't post much in this thread but usually sort 2 boxes a week. I just finished a box without a single Ag but did find a home for 2 dateless buffs and a 1938D which fills a hole in the album. Happy with that find.

YTD
$1700 sorted
3 Buffs
14 Ag
