1855 Pfennig found

Postby JerrySpringer » Fri Mar 29, 2013 2:14 pm

Pulled a very good condition 1855 1 pfennig coin today out of a penny bag. Same bag produced three 1943 steel US cents and a 1906 Indian Head plus many wheats including some teens. I think someone's coin collection got dumped. Is the 1855 pfennig worth much? I think it is the German version. It has the same obverse as this coin:

Details on the one I found are much sharper though.

I am unsure of value, but Germany was not yet unified in 1855. Final unification came in 1871 and empirical German coinage followed. So I would say that allot would depend on the German State that issued the coin, condition, and rarity of course. Post some pics and I am sure more educated forum members will chime in.
 cool find by the way!

Check it out here. Looks like you can attribute it to "German States - Hannover."

That is what I think it is. Interesting find. Just to see the 1855 date is surreal. A coin with very good detail after nearly 160 years in existence. It cost me one cent roughly. Probably put it in a time capsule or give it to a German friend at work. She'd get a kick out of it hopefully.
