Postby justoneguy » Fri Dec 31, 2010 12:23 pm

i have been looking at some proof roll quarters, but being a noob, i don't know how to tell if they're 90%.
Specifically, right now, some rolls of 1978 S proof quarters.
could some helpful member make a sticky on how to id later date silver,
or even just PM me if this is insider info ;)
TIA

There is one quick and easy way!

I believe quarters from that period were 40%- either way they will have a silver band on the edge. So check the ends of the coin for a band similar to a 40% silver half.

Also its worth checking to see if they even made silver proofs in 1978-S. I only know of the 1976 Quarter being like this.

This rule goes for all coins when telling clad from silver.

The mint didn't start making silver proof sets again until 1992. They made a special 40% silver 3pc. proof set in 1976. They made 40% Eisenhower dollars in 1971,1972,1973,and,1974 all of these will have an "S" mintmark they were struck in uncirculated (BU) also called "blue Ikes" and proof versions called "brown Ikes". Most of the modern silver proof sets can be found trading close to melt there are a few that have a collector premiums attached 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001.
