Three unidentified

Postby rexmerdinus » Sun May 19, 2013 9:34 am

about once a year I go through my "What the hell is it?" jar, and usually figure out what a few of my old pieces are. This year I finally ID'd an old So-Called Dollar type token that I've wondered about for about a decade. Google and Amazon Prime are great helps with this.
But I've got these three pieces that have been kicking around for about 15 years or so, and each year they make it back into the jar. Just wondering if anyone has any ideas on these.
On the ancient Roman looking one, I'm just looking for thoughts on whether it's genuine or not.
The other two, I'm stumped. The square tag is 1 inch by about 3/4 inch, and I was thinking the "GB" might stand for "great Britain." I'm thinking it's silver, but I'm not really sure.
All your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Well, the rampant lion is a common symbol in British coinage. It "feels" British to this British coin collector. But I've never seen anything like it. We did have one member from England... Devil Soundwave was his screen name. But he hasn't visited the site since last July. It's a long shot, but you might try a private message. There's the off chance he would notice it in his email.

The copper "5" could be something Masonic
And he that hath lyberte ought to kepe hit wel
For nothyng is better than lyberte
For lyberte shold not be wel sold for alle the gold and syluer of all the world

Thanks, I'll try it! Actually, the Mason thing should have occurred to me, since I've got some ties in that direction. I'll check into that too! The Roman appears to be genuine--I posted pics of it in another forum on ancient roman coins and they said they thought it was genuine. How it wound up in the stuff I got from my great uncle is a mystery. That's what I love about coins--every one has a story. You'll probably never know the whole story of most of their journeys into your hands, but to hold one in your hands and imagine whose hands it might have passed through along the way is fascinating.

Masonic sounds feasible. And as for the top coin, our most prolific poster HoardCopperByTheTon knows a bit about ancients. I figured he would have chimed in by now.
