results of my first $100 box of nickels and thoughts

So I got my first box of nickels and I got one silver nickel and 1 1984 Canadian nickel (my mom collects these they are not the .99 ones). I think its much more fun to search boxes of pennies. You find the occasional dime, about 10 Wheaties and lots of copper. The silver nickel might be worth more but it got pretty boring looking through the nickels. I'm trying dime searching next.

Nickels are fun if you collect them by year and mint mark. Saving the pre-60s can make it more interesting too. But yeah, if you're just looking for metal, they're pretty boring. Dimes are profitable if you search a lot. Time isn't an issue with dimes, but finding source and dump banks might be.

There's probably a thread somewhere. Henrysmedford will probably find it. I believe halves generally yield the most silver, but they're erratic. Dimes yield a fairly consistent 1-2 silvers per box. Nickels also about 1 per box average. Dimes are much better than nickels due to ease of searching than nickels. Only do nickels if you're interested in collecting as well as silver.

This is not to be a smart-a** but there are LOTS of threads on box/roll searching. Just browse around Realcent!

Mainly with pennies you are looking for pre82 copper and with Halves you are looking for silver.

nickels were fun to search for a while. I think I sorted about 30 boxes before I finally got burnt out. Finding the buffalos and V nicks are always interesting...but I was mainly doing it to fill some whitman folders and for the silver war nicks.

Silver: the Rodney Dangerfield of precious metals.

If it's printed on a piece of paper it's worth the paper it's printed on.
If it's a digital asset it's worth the electrons in cyberspace.

Keep your '09 Nickles and Dimes.
They are going to be "key dates" in the (not so soon?) future.
