14 k jewelry reminder

Postby daviscfad » Sun Jul 14, 2013 9:02 pm

Someone brought me some stuff the other day. it was all marked 14k! It passed the look test, the magnet test, but not the acid test. The person was disappointed but it was plated I guess. Remember if your buying to acid test the stuff

Intersting! What kind of jewelry was it? Did it have any marks that indicated a specific brand name?

Figaro and herringbone chains are absolutely the most common 14k marked plated items I see come across my desk.

I have seen the same 14k herring bone 3 times in the last week. It's only stamped on one end and no makers mark. It holds on 10k but 14k eats through it instantly and 14k acid should just turn a little on 10k. Also if it was 10k they wouldn't mark it 14k.

place a few drops of acid directly on the piece next time you see it, it will leave a permanent mark and make fun green stinky smoke... then it will never be mistaken for gold again :D

Where does one obtain the acids to test gold jewelry? Just wondering.

Thanks!

I have the complete kit with 6 acids, stone, magnifying loupe, magnet, and card or just the acid. I can hook you up as I have over 100 bottles of acid in stock. I only sell JSP acid, not the generics.

I sell acids too, but not generally by mail order, ebay is a good source along with a few vendors around here.
