What's the Highest You've Ever Bid on Something... and Lost?

Call me crazy, but on occasion I'll bid on ebay up to 26X or even 28X face on a BU roll of something silver that I really want. The insane part is that I'm not coming close to winning ANY of these auctions... and I'm getting blown away by bids that go 5X or even 15X higher in a few instances. I guess those sellers are bidding them on their break apart value and selling them as indies, whereas I view them as a separate commodity valued at a lower multiple. Prior to 2008 you could pick up BU rolls for ten to twenty percent above what avg circ was going for.

What's the Highest You've Ever Bid on Something... and Lost?

I think $1100 or $1200. On a group of analytic scales at an industrial auction. I think they ended up going for $1500 or $1600. Probably still room to make a little bit of money at that level, but if one turned out to be bad, you'd just be breaking even. If two turned out to be bad, you'd be in the hole. Wasn't worth the gamble.

Oh, coins. No idea

They should combine The Biggest Loser with Storage Auctions and have an episode of the worst mistakes ever made .... $2000 bucks on Goodwill clothes, etc.

There were many times I lost avg circ stuff while winning BU and proof rolls at 5% UNDER melt well past 2008. Ebay is just weird sometimes.
