10k and 14k

Why don't I see 14k and 10k coins or bars sold as bullion? I'm thinking of doing it. Is there any interest? My biggest concern is that the non gold metals would burn off during the process and leave me with a higher purity which could take from the profit margin which I expect to be very slim. My other concern is separation of metals which could lead to discoloration.

When I think of the word "bullion", I'm thinking of pure metal, not an alloy.

I think maybe you answered your own question; wouldn't the impurities melt off if anyone tried to melt it to make 14k or 10k jewelry? I don't actually know that - someone with more metallurgical knowledge will have to weigh in.

Depending on what you melt, the purity would most likely go down, having had/done a lot of refining, most karat gold is not plum.

If you get it hot enough long enough you should not have a problem with separation.

My guess is, it depends on what are you going to cut it down with.
I'd buy 10K-14K Au cut with Ag before I'd buy it cut with Cu.
Are you going to use the secret Chinese recipe of Au+Pb?
Maybe it might go up in value if you alloy it with a Platinum group metal?

I think that may be why you can't get better than 90% price on Stirling, you don't know what it's cut with.

I think if you were to make small bars out of existing jewelry 10K or 14K jewelry would come through ok.

On the other hand is the amount of time, effort and energy worth it?

Mostly its something I want to do. I ordered the stuff to do it Sunday.
