HOLY GRAIL 1950-D FOUND!!!

Postby scyther » Sun Nov 24, 2013 10:07 am

Okay, maybe it's not in the same league as the 1909-S VDB penny, but I just found the "holy grail" of the Jefferson nickel series! I found it in my 75th box (technically a few were bags, but whatever), the one that put me up to 150,000 nickels searched. The same box that, earlier tonight/today/this morning/yesterday/whatever it is, gave me the 1939-S I had been searching for for so long. I also found 2 war nickels in the same box, so... best box ever, to say the least.

It was probably about half way through the box when I saw brownish toned 1950... and somehow, I knew... I just had a feeling... and sure enough, when I turned it over... D!!!! It's weird how you can simultaneously expect something and not be able to believe it. I had a feeling it would happen, and yet, looking at it, I couldn't believe it. I just can't believe it. I just.... don't believe it :? .

Upon further inspection, I realized that treasured mint mark is very far to the right. Nowhere near the Monticello. Almost touching the rim. Is that normal? I'll try to figure out how to get some pictures of it on here soon, but until then, does anyone know if this seems wrong? I looked at some pictures on Ebay, and some of them have the mint mark far to the edge of the coin, while some don't. Does it just vary from coin to coin? I know this coin isn't very valuable today, but it was more valuable in the past. At least some counterfeits do exist. Do you think I have much to worry about with a coin like this?

As you may now by now, am a rather paranoid man. Is it too paranoid for me to think this coin might not be real?

EDIT: I also found a nice 1941-D to replace the badly worn one I had in my album. And a 2009-D, for what it's worth. What a box!

No idea about the counterfeiting of it, but you've had a stellar box to say the least! I'm taking a break from sorting but this gets me juiced up to restart eventually.

Yeah... I'm getting ready to take a break at the end of the year, but if this one's real, I pretty much have come back eventually for those last 2. I believe this is the last one you still need for your main set, right? They're still out there!

Great box and great finds. The 39s in the wild still "hides" in my next box. :) Hard to take too long of a break, but sometimes it helps, especially with the amount you've done lately.

You did great on that box!

i have no idea about the mint mark, but I hope it is legit.

Well, I took it to the LCS. He said it looked real, and that a fake would probably not be circulated (which already thought of, but it's good to know he thought that too). I asked him about the mint mark, and he looked at it with a loupe and said he thought it was fine. Then I compared it to this http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1 ... 05,1582940 and none of those things showed up on my coin. I'm thinking that, if this were fake, it would probably be an old fake, since I think modern Chinese counterfeiters are more concerned with making silver coins they can sell by the thousand, rather than collector coins each person probably only wants one of, and because it was in circulation, and has some wear. I'm still a little paranoid, but I'm not paying a $20 grading fee on a $5 coin, so I guess this is the best confirmation I'll get... In the album it goes :D .

Scyther

Belated congrats on your coin - I didn't realize just how 'rare' a find you've got, until this weekend....

I took all my nickels - a tad over $200 worth, picked out the best ones I could find, and in the books they went.

It was only upon doing that, and seeing all the empty spots that I still have, that the rarity of your coin set in.
Somehow, the mintage numbers in the red book don't register for me - but those empty slots do.

Again - congrats.

JD

PS: cwgii - Congrats to you as well.

I am working on 8 books of nickels and they are almost completely full from the wild. However, though I have found some really good dates in excellent conditions, I have never found a 50 d in the wild!!! So....good for you!
