39-59 nickles

For quite awhile I have saved every nickle of come across from 1939-1959. Are they worth any more than face value for the nickle content? I don't know what intrigues me about them but I always thought they they were kind of cool. I also have a few buffalo nickles. Are they worth much? Thanks

Your question has been asked before, including recently by me. Read this thread in its entirety. In summary, there is some value/market, but except for key dates it's marginal. I kept the 30s, warnicks, and key dates, and ditched the rest in favor of silver at the current low spot silver price.

I really can't argue with 68camaro. The market for older Jeffs is limited, and the margins are thin. I have several catagories in my sort. 1) War Nicks. Mid '42 - '45. 2) Buffs. 3) Liberty. 4) Errors. 5) Proofs. At least they started as proofs. 6) '38 - '49. 7) '50 - '59. 8) Requests from others. Usually for specific dates. The common early Jeffs, if that is all I sorted for, would be, in the long run, a losing proposition. Keep up the CL ads and the relationship with the local clubs.

I personally keep any nickels 1959 or older. I segregate and save all war nickels and tube separately by date anything with a mintage below 20 million. I also hold onto the 2009 P and D although I don't think they will have much of a premium in my lifetime. I probably have a couple hundred dollars in pre-60 nickels at this point and I look at them as part of my diversification plan. While they may not have much of a premium, they give me some inexpensive piece of mind with how today's economy is going.
