What Did Silver Santa Bring You?

Postby tedandcam » Thu Dec 12, 2013 11:07 pm

December is typically a good month for many of us to get a little (sometimes a lot) of extra silver from roll searching, given as change or other ways. Post your Santa Silver goodies here. I don't think it has anything to do with "being naughty or nice". More to do with being in the right place at the right time!

I noticed a few posts on different threads and figured we could consolidate our Santa Silver. Merry Christmas!

I found in the last week:

4 dime boxes:
46 dimes . All 4 had at least 10

4 half boxes:
50 - 40% Kennedy (1 box had 34)
13 - 90% Kennedy (1 box had 9)

One of the banks I stopped at on Tuesday had two rolls of halves available. One roll had 10 silver in it and the other had 12 silver inside. All 40% silver. Thank you Silver Santa.

Yesterday I decided to stop in a bank I usually drive by.
1 CWR Halves available.

1-64 3-40%.
Better than EVERY box I searched this year (so far).

Nothing yet. Checked for counter halves at four branches and found only $9 in halves, all skunks. I did decide to give the halves one more try, so stopped at a different branch and ordered a box for this coming week. One more time - was given some encouragement from tedandcam - so I won't stop trying just yet. :)

An Ode to Christmas Silver...

I made a visit to the bank over yonder,
I laid $100 on the counter,
to purchase rolls of dimes to search
and ponder...

With the rolls in to my possession,
I gave each coin a through visual inspection...

Now I'm feeling so sad,
for I must have been extremely bad,
as there was no silver, only clad.

At one of the banks I stopped at on Saturday looking for halves, the teller asked me if I wanted the large ones or the small ones. Large half dollars and small half dollars??? Ok, I'll take the large ones please. All they had was one customer wrapped roll. Inside were five 90% silver and one 40% silver. Thank you Silver Santa.

Right after Black Friday, I got a dime bag with 65 silvers. The ones since then have been average.

Still need another bag or two this year to meet my goal of $100 face in 90%.

I just got 1 40% half today. First ever! (I don't do too much searching). The teller had $3.50 so I took it and found one.

I finally managed to procure a ($500) dime bag, and got 9 silver. Not exactly an epic score, but pretty good. Of course it also had 8 pennies, 3 magnetic Canadian dimes, and a British 5 pence  ...

Went thru the 1st of 2 boxes of halves last night - all Kennedy, oldest was 1971, newest was 2006. Nothing - no silver of any flavor, no proofs, no '74 double dies.

Box 2 awaits, and I have # 3 & 4 on order for next week. A preliminary scan of the roll ends in box 2 is not encouraging.

Would one of you be so kind as to post a pic the edge of a 40% half? Given the very good chance of getting more dry boxes, I may resort to edge scanning, and not eyeballing each coins date. Not seen a 40%, just want to know what it looks like so as not to overlook one....

Many thanks

Been checking this thread for a bit and decided to pull the trigger on starting to look through dimes. My wife's rule is that I "need to be looking through coins for the kids"; meaning that I have to try and build them some coin folders-total of three. Stopped at the LCS and picked up three sets of roosevelt dime books starting in '65 thru present and went to bank and picked up $100 in BWR. Divided them up into decades for what I hope is easier sort later, but pulled out 2 silvers-43s Merc and a 59 roosie. Very happy with this first experience and after I place the better looking coins in the folders I might make a dump run and pick up some more rolls from the first branch in case there's more. Thanks for letting me share and Merry Christmas to you all!
