Some statistics

After searching 400,000 nickels, I came up with the following attrition percentages:

99.74% for nickels from the 1920s
98.52% for nickels from the 1930s
96.31% for nickels from the 1940s
93.03% for nickels from the 1950s
75.45% for nickels from the 1960s
52.62% for nickels from the 1970s
and 48.13% for nickels from 1980-1981 period.

Overall for .999 nickels the average attrition rate is 63.72%.

When I started three years ago the average rate for my first 20 boxes was at 12.2% now it is at 8.1% for my last 20 boxes.

They are for sure. We have had a queen on the coins since 1952. They are disctinctively different from the rest of the mintage.

Same goes for the 1967 rabbit of which I found only a handfull.

I have .999 Canadian (CA) nickel envy. Luckily, here in upstate NY we get more CA Cu than wheats and in my unscientific opinion more CA Ag than US Ag when searching rolls, and an occasional .999 in our nickels so there is a consolation. But I have visions of using the Ryedale to sort .999 and owning a nickel mine in addition to the copper mine. ~sigh~

Interesting statistics. I happened to lose my data from 2010-2012 but am hopeful that my data may reveal some trends after this year. Keep up the search.

The only comment I can add here is that in my own decidedly un-scientific study, the percentage of .999 to post-'82 that I pull off the counter magnets is roughly 70%. That number has been holding steady for awhile.

Today, I got 14 nickels, of which 10 were .999

And so far this year (starting Feb 1) I've found zero KG6, but two KG5...1923, 1930. And three hares.

Seriously? I have summers off. How's the fishing in your area? Might be time to open that Canadian Bank Account so when we visit my nephew in Buffalo, we can cross over and obtain some. Hummm, maybe it's time to do the passport thing too. I love Canadian beer and ale. Open to negotiation.

Living 5 miles from the Canadian border in NY, I average probably 3-5 Canadians in each roll which I like since most are CU!
